15 diesel locomotives of the Deutsche Bundesbahn built between 1965 and 1968 , which were used by Deutsche Bahn AG until the end of 2011 , are referred to as the V 162 series , or from 1968 the 217 series . Some machines have been used by non-federal railway companies since 2013 .

history

prehistory

In the early 1960s, the then Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) and the German rail vehicle industry developed the V 160 series , later referred to as the 216 series, a type of diesel locomotive with diesel-hydraulic power transmission for use on medium-weight passenger and freight trains on main and freight trains Branch lines . The locomotive of the type V 160 possessed a boiler for heating of passenger coaches .

It became apparent that in the future, wagons with electric train heating would primarily be used.

Prototypes

753 001-7, a V 162 used for experiments

In 1963, the DB therefore commissioned Krupp AG to develop a V 160 variant with electric train heating, which was to bear the type designation V 162. Krupp then delivered the two prototypes V 162 001 and V 162 002 in 1965, which were reinforced by the third prototype V 162 003 in 1966.

The three locomotives had a 16-cylinder type 16V652 TB10 engine built by MTU with 1,427  kilowatts (1,940  hp ). The power of the main engine should be completely available for traction. Since Krupp did not have a more powerful engine for the V 162 in the mid-1960s, an auxiliary engine had to be included to operate the heater generator for the electric train heater . This in turn required a longer locomotive body than the V 160 with a total length over buffers of 16.4 meters.

As an auxiliary engine, Krupp used the 12-cylinder D3650 HM3U engine from the manufacturer MAN , which has an output of 386 kilowatts (500 hp) and is used as a traction diesel engine in the 614 series . According to the requirements of the DB, the auxiliary engine in freight transport , where it was not needed for the operation of the heating generator, should provide additional traction power. The traction output can be increased to 1,813 kilowatts if necessary. The heating generators of the three prototypes came from different manufacturers: In V 162 001 from BBC , in V 162 002 from AEG and in V 162 003 from Siemens . The Siemens generator in V 162 003 proved its worth here.

The three prototypes were extensively tested from 1965 to 1968. They were used from the Hamm and Mühldorf locations .

Pre-production locomotives

Building on the positive experience with the prototypes, the DB commissioned Krupp to build twelve pre-series locomotives in 1967. According to the new numbering scheme that came into force in 1968 , the type or series designation was changed from V 162 to (series) 217 . The pre-production locomotives have the numbers 217 011 to 217 022, the prototypes were numbered 217 001 to 217 003.

The twelve pre-production models of the 217 series were all delivered in the course of 1968. Six vehicles each were allocated to the DB locations in Hagen - Eckesey and Regensburg . After they were initially equipped with block brakes , they were given disc brakes in 1971 , which allowed the maximum speed to be increased by 20 km / h to 140 km / h.

Even when the pilot series was ordered, it was foreseeable that no further vehicles of this type would be built afterwards: At the same time, the first representatives of the 218 series were created from 1968 , with the traction and heating power of a single, 2500 HP (later 2800 HP) engine be generated. About 400 copies of this successor type were built in the following years.

Mission history

At the end of 1970 and beginning of 1971, the three prototype locomotives used from Mühldorf were transferred to the DB Bahnbetriebswerk Regensburg, where six of the pre-series locomotives were already stationed. After the locomotives were deployed from Mühldorf in Upper Bavaria , their operational radius extended mainly in the Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia . In 1972 the six pre-production locomotives initially used from the Hagen-Eckesey location were relocated to Regensburg, so that all 15 locomotives were concentrated in Regensburg. Among other things, they were used to haul heavy freight trains on the Regensburg - Schwandorf  - Hof and Nuremberg  - Sulzbach-Rosenberg  - Schwandorf - Furth im Wald routes.

On April 28, 1989, the prototype locomotives 217 001 and 217 002 were officially declared to be rail service vehicles for internal service purposes , which was accompanied by a change in the numbers to 753 001 and 753 002. Both locomotives had already been used frequently for test and measurement drives in connection with the testing of vehicles since 1974 , for example to function as a brake locomotive . The renaming therefore had a purely formal character.

In 1993, the pre-series locomotives of the 217 series were used on a trial basis in front of trains made up of double-deck cars on the Mühldorf  - Munich connection , as the 218 series caused problems. The vehicles with the numbers 217 011 to 217 021 have an exhaust gas control system (so-called hood ) installed on both diesel engines . This operation lasted only one and a half days, as the 217 series did not prove itself in terms of performance, so that the 218 series took over the double-decker trains again and the 217 series vehicles returned to Regensburg.

In 1998, the division of the first set up in 1994 was made division traction of Deutsche Bahn in the divisions distance traffic / DB long-distance transport , transport / DB Regio and freight / DB Cargo. The 217s were assigned to freight traffic and thus to the DB subsidiary DB Cargo (later Railion, 2008-2016 DB Schenker Rail Germany, today again DB Cargo Germany ). In 2000, all locomotives of the series moved from Regensburg to Mühldorf.

Due to the expiry of the revision deadlines, 217 003 and 217 022 were the first machines to be z-provided . On the other hand, 217 017, 012 and 019 received another simplified general inspection at the Bremen plant in 2008 , during which the heating diesel engine characteristic of this series was removed and replaced with a ballast weight . DB Railion initially planned to reactivate copies 217 003 and 217 022. This was no longer pursued due to a lack of demand in the course of the global economic crisis , which was triggered by the financial crisis from 2007 , as well as due to their poor general condition. On the contrary, several 217 were shut down in 2008 and 2009. According to plans by DB Schenker Rail Deutschland, the entire 217 series was originally to be taken out of service at the end of 2009, so that only the 217 001 from DB Systemtechnik would have remained. Due to a chronic shortage of locomotives in Mühldorf, the operating time was extended until 2011.

In November 2011, with 217 012, 017, 019 and 021, only four locomotives were still operational, which were used from the Mühldorf station without their own schedule. After 217 002 was z-placed on September 6, 2011 , the remaining four machines followed until the end of 2011. The last operational machine was 217 017, which was z-placed on December 17, 2011.

The prototype copy 217 001 was z-provided in autumn 2010 with an engine failure and was no longer repaired due to its short remaining periods. Before that, it was deployed nationwide in test and measurement drives from Munich .

Use by private railways

217 002, Railway Tourism Express

The pre-series locomotive 217 002 was sold in autumn 2012 by the last owner DB Schenker Rail Deutschland (today DB Cargo Deutschland ) to the company BahnTouristikExpress in Nuremberg and has been in operational condition again since February 22, 2013 after a renewed general inspection.

At the beginning of 2014, the locomotives 217 012, 015, 017, 020 and 021 were sold to the Pfalzbahn Eisenbahnbetriebsgesellschaft in Frankenthal, which uses them for passenger and freight transport. The 217 012 has been in use since spring 2014 with remaining deadlines under the direction of Pfalzbahn GmbH. The 217 017 has been used by Raphael Hofmann Güterverkehr at times since October 2014 and after its revision in 2015 it was repainted in old red. The remaining three machines are shut down when the deadline has expired or if there is damage.

The locomotive 217 019 was sold to the ESG railway service company in Vaihingen (Enz). ESG has been using this machine for construction site logistics in southern Germany since August 2014 following the adaptation and completion of spare parts removed from DB Schenker Rail (now DB Cargo ) in blue paintwork.
