geography

Geographical location

Espenhain is located in the Leipzig lowland bay about 20 km south of Leipzig and 8 km north of Borna , in the middle of the newly developed Leipzig New Lakeland .

Neighboring communities

In the immediate vicinity of Espenhain are the places Rötha , Borna , Kitzscher and Dreiskau-Muckern .

Local division

The community Espenhain is essentially divided into the old town center, called “the village”, into the settlement, the new building area, which served as living space for the employees of VEB BKK Espenhain in the early 1960s, and the districts Mölbis , Oelzschau and Pötzschau .

history

For the history of the districts, see there.

After it was founded as the Old Sorbian village of Miertzsch around 800, the place was founded as a square village after 1150, promoted by Wiprecht von Groitzsch, and around 1350 was given the name "Espenhain". The small farming village was heavily involved in the battles of the Battle of Nations in 1813/1814. Until 1856, Espenhain was part of the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon District Office in Leipzig . From 1856 the place belonged to the Rötha court office and from 1875 to the Borna district administration . Lignite mining began in 1896. A railway line to Böhlen was opened in 1913. In 1937 the Espenhain opencast mine was opened up , and in 1940 the first coal was delivered.

Espenhain achieved notoriety as the dirtiest place in the GDR due to the resident VEB BV Espenhain . In the 1960s, in connection with the economic focus on petrochemicals, the plants were subjected to massive wear and tear. When coal chemistry regained importance in the early 1970s , production in the worn out facilities was increased to maximum output. As a result, and due to the lack of investment in environmental protection, the pollutant emissions in air and water rose sharply. There was always a cloud of phenols, sulfur, soot and ash over the place and its surroundings. The high emissions made it necessary to sweep streets and sidewalks every morning as a thick layer of ash had settled. Some residents report that occasionally the sun would disappear behind clouds of ash and that cars had to run with lights on during the day. The health effects on the city's residents were devastating. As a result, life expectancy was several years below the national average. Children in particular suffered greatly from the occurring skin and respiratory diseases, such as B. Eczema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ). Even today, many residents are affected by long-term effects.

On August 1, 2015 Espenhain was incorporated into the city of Rötha.
