The Espenhain solar power plant , also known as the Leipziger Land solar power plant , is located in Espenhain , a district of Rötha in the Leipzig district .

This power plant is a photovoltaic system . It was built as a joint project of the Berlin project development company GEOSOL Gesellschaft für Solarenergie mbH and what was then Shell Solar AG . On the 16  hectare site there are 33,500 solar modules with a nominal peak output of around 5 MW. The plant stands on a former coal dust dump of the decommissioned lignite combine Espenhain and was designed in such a way that an existing natural biotope is preserved. In addition, a new concept of a wooden substructure was implemented here. Berliner Solar Asset Management operates and maintains the system.

According to the forecast, the plant generates 4617 MWh per year (corresponds to 527 kW) and thus saves around 4,000 tonnes of CO 2 emissions every year.

The solar field was inaugurated on September 8, 2004 and at that time was one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
