Richard Steche (born February 17, 1837 in Leipzig , † January 3, 1893 in Niederlößnitz ; full name: Franz Richard Steche ) was a German architect , art historian and preservationist ; he is considered the founder of the Saxon inventory work .

Life

He was the son of the Leipzig lawyer Albert Steche and his wife, the singer Lidy Steche , born. Angermann. After graduation in 1856 at the Leipzig Thomas School Steche began studying at the Baugewerkenschule Dresden. From 1859 to 1861 he studied architecture at the Berlin Bauakademie and then made his first practical experience in the studios of Heinrich Strack and Richard Lucae .

In 1863 he found a job as an architect at the Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway . He planned the new station buildings in Oertzenhof and Neubrandenburg and in 1864 the renovations of the historic village churches of Lübbersdorf and Sadelkow .

Steche returned to Dresden as an architect in 1867. His largest project from here was the Eilenburg train station in Leipzig- Reudnitz in the years 1874–1876. In 1875 he was the initiator of the trade history exhibition in Dresden.

In 1877 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Hans von Dehn-Rothfelser at the University of Leipzig and in 1878 his habilitation . He became a private lecturer in the history of technical arts at the Dresden Polytechnic ; at the same time he was a lecturer at the local arts and crafts school.

Richard Steche was from 1880 professor for the history of technical arts and practical aesthetics at the Dresden Polytechnic (today: Technical University of Dresden) and second director of the Royal Saxon Antiquities Association (from 1878). In addition to his successful work as an architect, Steche became known as the first inventor of the art monuments of Saxony with his 15-volume work Descriptive Presentation of the older architectural and art monuments of the Kingdom of Saxony .

He spent the last years of his life in Niederlößnitz , where he died of tuberculosis in 1893. His tomb with the portrait relief of Heinrich Epler is in the churchyard of the Friedenskirche in Kötzschenbroda , where he was buried on January 6, 1893 in the presence of an illustrious mourners, although the churchyard had actually been closed since the renovation in 1884.

His Saxon inventory work was continued by the art historian Cornelius Gurlitt from 1894.

A commemorative plaque was affixed to his home at Winzerstraße 37, named "Pug House" by his daughter Lidy after the family dog, on the 115th anniversary of his death in 2008.

Richard Steche was the brother of Otto Steche (1834–1908), who was also buried in Kötzschenbroda , and co-owner of the Heine & Co. company founded with Carl Heine in 1859 for the manufacture of essential oils and artificial fragrances.
