- 1777 : The Continental Army of the Thirteen Colonies under General George Washington defeats British and Hessian units under Charles Cornwallis at the Battle of Princeton in the American War of Independence .
- 1778 : In the Vienna Convention , Joseph II obtained the cession of Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria by the new Bavarian Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz to Austria in exchange for Upper Austria and substantial monetary compensation.
