Chetan Anand (Director)

Chetan Anand ( Hindi : चेतन आनंद, Cetan Ānand; born January 3, 1915 in Lahore , Punjab , † July 10, 1997 in Delhi , Delhi ) was an Indian film director and producer.

Life

Chetan Anand came to film in 1944 and had his first role in Phani Majumdar's Rajkumar . His directorial debut was the film Neecha Nagar (1946), which was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival of the same year . It was also the debut film by actress Kamini Kaushal .

In 1949 Chetan founded the film production company Navketan Productions with his younger brother Dev Anand , their first production was Afsar (1950) with Dev in the lead role. They also had success with Taxi Driver (1954).

He later produced films under the company Himalaya Films , which he founded with cameraman Jal Mistry , film music composer Madan Mohan and songwriter Kaifi Azmi . As part of the team, they created some of the most famous Hindi films , including Haqeeqat (1964), Heer Ranjha (1970), Hanste Zakhm (1973) and Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973). Chetan Anand received a National Film Award for Haqeeqat . In 1988, the Anand-produced television series Param Vir Chakra was broadcast on Doordarshan .

After separating from his wife, Chetan Anand lived with actress Priya Rajvansh for a long time until his death . She played the leading role in Anand's Haqeeqat and all of his subsequent films.

In 2000, Priya Rajvansh was murdered over inheritance disputes and Anand's two sons, Ketan and Vivek Anand, were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
