Dev Anand
Dev Anand ( Hindi : देव आनंद Dev Ānand ; born September 26, 1923 in Gurdaspur , Punjab ; † December 3, 2011 in London ; real name: Devdutt Pishorimal Anand ) was an Indian actor , director and producer .
Life
He made his film debut in 1946. His first success came in 1948 on Bombay Talkies with Ziddi . In the 1950s he played under Subodh Mukherjee and Guru Dutt and turned out to be a versatile actor who can embody romantic lovers but also comical heroes or half-silly characters. In the film Guide (1965), the first Indian-American co-production, he convinces with sensitive play in the title role.
From 1970 onwards, Dev Anand increasingly directed himself and appeared mostly as an actor in his own films. His first directorial film was Prem Pujari . He had his own production company called Navketan Films since 1949 .
Dev Anand has won numerous film awards, including two Filmfare Awards as an actor, the Oscars of Hindi Film, 1958 for Kala Pani and 1966 for Guide . In 1993 he received the Filmfare Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2003 he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award . He has also been a holder of the Padma Bhushan since 2001 .
Dev Anand was one of the big stars of Bollywood cinema of the 1940s and 1950s , along with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor . He played leading roles in over 100 films in five decades and was still active in the film industry at the age of 80. Anand was married to actress Kalpana Kartik since 1954 . His brothers Vijay and Chetan Anand were also in the film business; his sister Sheel Kanta is the mother of Shekhar Kapur .
Anand's son Suneil Anand , with whom he appeared together in Anand Aur Anand (1984), took over the management of Navketan Films.
