Mayte Michelle Rodríguez (born July 12, 1978 in San Antonio , Texas ) is an American actress , environmental activist and voice actress .

Life

Michelle Rodríguez moved to the Dominican Republic , her mother's homeland, when she was eight . From the age of eleven, she lived in Puerto Rico , her father's home. On her mother's side, she was raised as a Jehovah's Witness in childhood . She has a total of ten siblings and half-siblings. At the age of 16, she moved to Jersey City , in the immediate vicinity of New York City . She dropped out of high school but graduated later. She briefly attended a business school before deciding on a career as an actress.

Career

After a few minor supporting roles, she became known with her first leading role in the film Girlfight - On Your Own , for which she won the casting against 350 applicants. For her portrayal of Diana Guzman, she received an Independent Spirit Award in the “Best Debut Performance” category and the National Board of Review award in the “Breakout Performance of the Year” category.

After Girlfight more roles followed in such films as The Fast and the Furious (2001), Resident Evil (2002), Blue Crush (2002), SWAT - The Special Forces (2003), the science fiction film Avatar - Pandora (2009 ) and in Robert Rodriguez 's Machete (2010).

From 2005 to 2006 she played the character of Ana Lucia in the television series Lost , which she took up again for guest appearances in 2009 and 2010. In 2011 she appeared alongside Aaron Eckhart in the science fiction film World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles .

In 2012, Rodríguez returned as Rain Ocampo in Resident Evil: Retribution . 2013 she stood as Letty in Fast & Furious 6 , and again as She / Luz in Machete Kills , the first sequel of Machete , on camera.

Conflicts with the law

In November 2003, Rodríguez was charged with several offenses, including drunk driving and fleeing from an accident . In June 2004 in Los Angeles, she accepted three of the allegations. The actress was sent to jail for 48 hours, did community service at a morgue, and took part in a three-month alcohol education program. The sentence was given with a three-year probation period.

In December 2005, Rodríguez was arrested in Hawaii for substance abuse behind the wheel. She pleaded guilty in a trial in April 2006, paid a US $ 500 fine and spent five days in prison. In May 2006, she was sentenced in Los Angeles to 60 days in prison, 30 days of community service, and participation in an alcohol withdrawal program for violating probation. However, due to overcrowding in the prison, she was released a few hours after starting her sentence.

Rodríguez was sentenced to 180 days in prison in October 2007 for further violations of her probation conditions. On December 23, 2007, she began her sentence at Lynwood Women's Prison. However, Rodríguez only spent 17 days there. The reason given for her early release was the overcrowded women's prisons in California.

Commitment to the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd

In 2010, Michelle Rodríguez sailed as a crew member on the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin on its seventh anti-whaling campaign Operation No Compromise in Antarctica.

In 2011, Rodriguez hosted a charity lunch for Sea Shepherd at the Cannes Film Festival . In 2017, Rodriguez participated in Sea Shepherd's Operation Taino Spirit campaign. Sea Shepherd and Rodriguez brought supplies to the population of Puerto Rico to ensure sustainable development after Hurricane Maria . In 2017, Rodriguez accompanied Sea Shepherd on the Operation Ice Watch mission . Photos with baby seals were created , which she shared on various social networks to draw attention to climate change and its impact on the seals.
