The film is based on a " fake trailer " from the opening act for the film Planet Terror . The main character, Machete Cortez , is originally from Rodriguez's 2001 film Spy Kids . In the United States, the film was released on September 3, 2010 by 20th Century Fox ; in Germany it is distributed by Sony Pictures . The German theatrical release was brought forward from the original date, November 18, 2010, to November 4, 2010. action

“Machete”, a former Mexican federal agent, is a shabby man who wanders the streets of Texas looking for work after a conflict with the drug lord Torrez. Michael Booth, a businessman, tells Machete that the corrupt US Senator McLaughlin plans to send hundreds of illegal immigrants back to Mexico. He offers "Machete" $ 150,000 to kill McLaughlin. "Machete" accepted, but was shot at by a Booth henchman during the attempted assassination. It turns out that Booth set it up to make McLaughlin's tough anti-immigration policies socially acceptable by making it look like an illegal immigrant was attempting an assassination attempt on the Senator.

The wounded “machete” is taken to a hospital, but is able to escape arrest. He is helped by employees of the "Netzwerk", an organization that makes it easier for illegal Mexican immigrants to get started in Texas . In order to catch him, agent Sartana is set on "machete" by the US immigration authorities . However, he overpowers her and tries to convince her that Booth is behind the assassination. While searching for evidence against Booth, “Machete” kidnaps his wife and daughter, with his brother and Luz supporting him. While Sartana develops a feeling for Machete, the latter rounds up a group of illegal immigrants to hunt down those who tricked him. Padre Cortez is crucified and killed in the church. The killing scene with Booth is recorded by video cameras installed in the church. These recordings will be shown to John McLaughlin at a press conference. He escapes with Booth in his limousine, where he shoots Booth. The flight continues in a taxi with which he carried out at base of vigilantes running. McLaughlin is said to be executed, but the execution of “Machete” and his men is prevented. Luz, who was apparently shot in the eye in a previous scene, reappears with an eye patch and saves “Machete”, who is being held by several people. Luz enables McLaughlin to escape by advising him to dress up as a Mexican.

In the end, “Machete” and Torrez, who staged the whole story, face each other. Torrez dies after "Machete" rammed his machete into his stomach. “Machete” finally drives off on the motorcycle with Agent Sartana, while John McLaughlin disguised as a Mexican is shot by his own vigilante at the border fence with the words “Welcome to America”.

production

For Grindhouse - Double Feature by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino several trailers were staged to non-existent films. Machete is one of them and was the only one of these trailers to be shown in the split European version of Grindhouse right before Planet Terror , but in an extended version. Because Rodriguez received a lot of approval for the trailer, he decided to produce a full film. In March 2007, Rodriguez officially announced that he would expand the trailer to a feature film. Initially this was announced as a bonus film on the Planet Terror DVD , but was then evaluated as a theatrical release. The role of Julio , eventually played by Daryl Sabara , was previously offered to Jonah Hill .

Filming began on July 29, 2009 in Austin , Texas . Rodriguez filmed an election campaign for Senator John McLaughlin at the Austin Capitol. Lindsay Lohan turned off her role in three days.

In the post-production of the film, based on the Grindhouse project, including its own trailer contained therein, an artificial manipulation of the individual images in the form of "blurring, scratches, scuffs and discolorations up to entire treads or picture dropouts" was used to ensure the (digital to adapt the filmed) film to an (analog) aesthetic inherent in the genre; however, Rodriguez only follows this scheme in the prologue and opening credits, i.e. for the first seven to eight minutes of the film.

On May 5, 2010, Rodriguez took a stand on a controversial Arizona immigration law by posting an "illegal" trailer on Ain't It Cool News . The trailer combined parts from the old fake trailer from Grindhouse with new scenes and implied that the main character would lead a revolt against anti-immigrant politicians. Many websites, including the Internet Movie Database, reported that this was an official trailer for the movie. Rodriguez later revealed it was a joke: "It was Cinco de Mayo and I had too much tequila."

Its premiere machete on September 1, 2010 to the International Film Festival of Venice 2010 Out of Competition. The US theatrical release of the film took place on September 3, in German cinemas started Machete on November 4, 2010. In German-speaking Switzerland it was released on November 18, 2010. Austria followed on December 17th, and the film was shown at the Viennale on October 24th, 2010 . With a budget of around 10.5 million US dollars, the film grossed around 44 million US dollars worldwide.

Reviews

"'He's gonna kill him!" - 'No he's not, it's machete!' - 'Good Point!' Is the motto at the end when Machete is in big trouble in the final showdown. [...] This is about a larger-than-life hero who is a myth and who cannot be harmed by anything or anyone. It's old-school, but it's great fun. Exploitation cinema that is straight to the point, even if 'Machete' does not quite reach the inventiveness of 'Planet Terror'. "

- Björn Becher ("Filmstarts.de")

“On the one hand, this film is an imposition. He is unbearable. He glorifies violence. It consists only of clichés, sex and violence. On the other hand, the director Robert Rodriguez is a bloody artist. [..] 'Machete' is not a satire, but an homage to splatter films, spaghetti westerns and B-movies. And so unbelievably cool that afterwards you want to briefly continue your own life in the armed underground on the border between the USA and Mexico. "

- Maren Keller (" Spiegel Online ")

“Ultimately, however, the machete did not become the expected wet dream that the Grindhouse disciples envisioned. In the second half he treads too far, he doesn't have much substance to add to his (self-) quotes and instead indulges in an endless action orgy that can either delight or be boring. "

- Marco Siedelmann (Critic.de)

"A film committed to the trash cinema of the 1970s with drastic elements, which goes to court as a bloody and evil political satire with the exploitation of illegal immigrants in the USA, xenophobia and the corruption surrounding the lucrative drug trade."

Awards

Jessica Alba 2011 received an ALMA Award as Favorite Actress in a Drama / Adventure (Favorite Movie Actress - Drama / Adventure) . Danny Trejo was nominated as a Favorite Movie Actor as well as the film as a Favorite Movie for the award.

Alba also received the Golden Raspberry 2011 as the worst supporting actress for her performance in the films The Killer Inside Me , My Wife, Our Children and I , Valentine's Day and Machete .

Home theater evaluation

For the home theater version, Robert Rodriguez announced an extended version with more brutal scenes in advance. It is not yet clear whether the R-rated theatrical version should also be used in the home video area. A (legal) DVD release of the cinema version of “Machete” was released in Russia in September 2010, but for licensing reasons this DVD only contains the Russian and Ukrainian soundtracks.

Sequels

According to Danny Trejo, the script for the Machete Kills sequel was written by the time Machete was released. There should also be a second sequel. Both titles will be shown in the credits of the movie and the DVD / Blu Ray release. Rodriguez confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2011 that the scripts for two sequels have been completed and that both projects have already received the green light to go into production. "Machete Kills" has now been realized and on November 11th. Published October 2013. Filming lasted only 29 days, ending on July 28, 2012.

Another sequel titled Machete Kills Again ... In Space! has been considered possible since Rodriguez's announcement in 2011.

Parallels to other Robert Rodriguez films

  • In the film Desperado , Danny Trejo plays a killer who wears the same vest that the machete wears in the final scene.
  • Danny Trejo plays the role of Isodoro "Machete" Cortez in Spy Kids (2001) , who is mentioned several times as Uncle Machete during the course of the film .
  • The doctor in the hospital, Dr. Felix, also appears in Planet Terror and Death Proof . The actor in all three films is Felix Sabates. Sabates also plays in Spy Kids 2 - The Return of the Super Spies as Felix in the test family.
  • The nurses in the showdown are played by the sisters Electra and Elise Avellán, who already embodied the nanny twins in Planet Terror. They are Robert Rodriguez's nieces.
  • When Sartana checks Machete's file, it is discovered that he has two nicknames. On the one hand "Navajas", the killer from Desperado and on the other hand "Cuchillo", a cartel member who plays Trejo in the science fiction film Predators .
  • Rose McGowan made a guest appearance as a contract killer in a deleted scene, most recently she worked with Rodriguez on Planet Terror .
  • In another omitted scene, a sheriff appears whose name is "McGraw". The McGraws appear in many Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino films and are considered a kind of trademark.
