Sin City

Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For (Original title: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For ) is the sequel to the 2005 US film Sin City , which opened in German cinemas on September 18, 2014. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller directed and co-wrote the script with William Monahan . The cast includes numerous actors from the previous film, including Jessica Alba , Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis , as well as new cast members such as Eva Green , Josh Brolin , Jamie Chung and Joseph Gordon-Levitt .

The film is based on the second book A Dame to Kill For from the Sin City series by Frank Miller. A small part of the plot is based on the short story Just Another Saturday Night , which is described in the book Booze, Broads and Bullets , the sixth volume in the comic series. Miller also wrote two original stories exclusively for the film.

Episodes

Just Another Saturday Night

Marv comes to on a country road, surrounded by young, dead men. He can only partially remember how he got there. He was at Kadie's as usual, but he couldn't enjoy Nancy's show. He went out, disturbed. In an alley behind the bar he watched young men pour gasoline over an older man and set it on fire. Marv puts her to flight and hangs himself on her car. Outside the city they have an accident. The survivors flee to the district where Marv grew up and has friends, with whose help the last two also find their deaths. Marv wonders where his coat and gloves come from. He can't remember it.

The Long Bad Night - Part 1

The young player Johnny meets the barmaid Marcy, wins the necessary starting capital on the slot machine to participate in a poker round and then takes out the powerful Senator Roark. Johnny and Marcy celebrate winning until they have trouble paying for a meal. Johnny understands who is behind the blocking of his credit cards. On the street, the two are followed by two thugs. After Johnny has taken care of her, he wants them to meet again later in a hotel. Johnny gets into Roark's limo, his money is stolen and three of his fingers are broken. Then he is thrown out of the car. On the rainy street, Roark reveals that he has already realized he is Johnny's father, but he doesn't care. He had only had one real son. Then he shoots Johnny's leg. Not to kill him, but so that he remembers Roark with every storm. Because that is power.

A lady to kill for

Private detective Dwight McCarthy makes a living spying on and photographing unfaithful husbands. He watches a man named Joey frantically inform Sally, his regular prostitute, that his wife is already suspicious. Since he would lose all of his property in adultery, they are no longer allowed to meet. He sleeps with her one more time, then pulls a gun with the intention of killing Sally. Dwight, watching through a skylight, hesitates whether to intervene or not. Finally he jumps through the glass and knocks Joey down. When Sally requests to kill him, he does not respond. Dwight ties Joey to the bed and takes Sally with him, whom he drops off in Oldtown, the red-light district of Basin City.

His former love Ava Lord contacts him. She wants to meet with him. Dwight is torn inside because he had sworn to himself never to give her power over himself again. He shows up half an hour early at the agreed meeting place, at Kadie's, and she shows up an hour late. He is supposed to help her escape from her abusive husband. At first he doesn't believe her. When Manute, one of Lord's henchmen, appears, he takes Ava with him without saying much. Incited by curiosity, he breaks into the villa to investigate. He is discovered and beaten up by Manute. Ava is already waiting for him at home. They have sex and Dwight surrenders to her completely. When Manute shows up, he throws Dwight out of the window and takes Ava with him. Dwight is now determined and asks Marv for help. With him he breaks into the villa again. While Manute loses an eye while fighting Marv, Dwight confronts Mr. Lord. After the latter is ultimately killed by Dwight, Ava reveals her true intentions to inherit her husband's money while aiming a revolver at him. She wants to kill Dwight only to have it later portrayed as self-defense, but she shoots the limited amount of ammunition and only wounds him badly. He jumps out of the window and is now picked up by Marv and taken away.

Ava now begins to seduce Mort, one of the two investigating police officers, Hartigan's successor and Bob's new partner. She poses as the disturbed and scared widow who fears Dwight will reappear. Mort takes the case personally and decides to find Dwight on his own to kill him. Bob notices Mort's change. When he tries to persuade Mort to reason, the latter shoots him in a fit of anger. In shock, Mort judges himself. After Marv has brought the seriously injured Dwight to Oldtown, as requested by him, and he received medical care there, Dwight leaves the city and has his face operated on because he has is now wanted for the murder. Back in Basin City, he decides to invade Lord's mansion again, this time to kill Ava. He shoots her while she is in his arms trying to deceive him again.

The Long Bad Night - Part 2

Johnny goes to a seedy surgeon who removes a bullet and fixes his fingers. Then Johnny makes his way to the hotel to check on Marcy. He climbs into the room through a window and realizes that Roark is already waiting for him. His men killed and dismembered Marcy. After showing the head to Johnny, he jumps out the window to escape the men. Out of pity, bartender Bertha gives him a dollar in a bar. This is enough for Johnny to win new start-up capital at a machine and play against Roark again in poker. After Johnny has lost numerous rounds, Roark tries everything to finally beat him, but Johnny wins with 4 aces. He had let Roark win at first to get him out of the reserve. Everyone at the table should see his defeat. They'll talk about how the most powerful man in town was exposed by a stranger. Roark shoots Johnny.

Nancy's Last Dance

Four years after Hartigan's suicide at the end of That Yellow Bastard , Nancy has yet to come to terms with his death and seeks revenge on Senator Roark. He plays poker in the bar she works at. She has had the opportunity to shoot him many times, but has never pulled the trigger.

She scratches her face out of anger at her own cowardice. Marv, who protects Nancy from digging in the bar, assumes that someone has hurt her and offers to help. The two break into Roark's mansion and shoot their way free. Marv is shot, but Nancy gets to Roark's office, where Roark shoots her. When he tries to shoot her, he sees Hartigan's ghost in the mirror and is startled, so Nancy can pull the trigger.

production

Emergence

In 2005, after the previous film Sin City was released, Rodriguez announced plans for a sequel that would feature most of the characters again. This time the film was to be based on Frank Miller's second volume A Bride to Be Murdered for . Miller said the film will be both a sequel and a prequel, with stories that take place before and after the first film. Miller, who also wrote the script for the first part, assumed that production would begin in late 2006. According to Rodriguez, the casting shouldn't start until the script is completely finished. In 2007 at Comic-Con , Frank Miller confirmed that he and Rodriguez had already completed the script, but that there were delays because of the Weinstein Company .

According to Miller, the film should include the original stories A Dame to Kill For and Just Another Saturday Night, as well as two new stories Frank Miller wrote especially for the film, one of which is called The Long, Bad Night . In September 2011 it was announced that William Monahan was hired to put the finishing touches on Miller's script. In March 2012, Rodriguez announced that production would begin in mid-2012. He also mentioned that the cast was "of the same caliber" as the previous film.

On April 13, 2012, production of the film was confirmed, along with the title Sin City: A Dame to Kill For . It was expected that while production would start in the summer of 2012, filming could not begin until late October. On June 17, 2013, the release date was moved from October 4, 2013 to August 22, 2014. Rodriguez later stated that the film was intended to open in 2014 and that the October date was more for machete kills . In May 2014, a poster for the film was banned by the Motion Picture Association of America because it showed Eva Green in a wide-cut dress.

occupation

Rosario Dawson plays Gail

During pre-production for the first film in 2005, Angelina Jolie was traded as a cast for Ava ; so vehemently that supposedly production was postponed because of her pregnancy. In the following years, actresses such as Salma Hayek , Rose McGowan , and Rachel Weisz were traded for the role alongside Jolie . On January 29, 2013, however, it was officially announced that Eva Green had been cast in the role.

On October 29, 2012, it was confirmed that Devon Aoki would not return to play Miho due to her second pregnancy and that Jamie Chung would play her part. On December 5, 2012, it was announced that Dennis Haysbert will replace the late Michael Clarke Duncan as Manute .

Josh Brolin plays Dwight

On January 7, 2013, it was confirmed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be cast as the new character Johnny . The character is not to be confused with another character named Johnny from the short story Daddy's Little Girl . A day later it was reported that Josh Brolin would play the role of Dwight . The cast was necessary as part of the narrative because Dwight had a different face before his accident. Originally, Clive Owen , who played the role in the first part, was supposed to continue the part after Dwight's facial surgery. Rodriguez found Brolin so convincing in his role that he let him play the last part.

On January 29, 2013 it was announced which characters would play the new cast members Ray Liotta , Juno Temple , Christopher Meloni and Jeremy Piven . Accordingly, Liotta plays the character Joey Canelli , a married businessman who cheats on his wife. Temple was cast as Sally , an Old Town girl and Joey's lover. Meloni got the role of Mort , Bob's new partner and one of the Basin City cops . Piven replaces Michael Madsen as Bob , with Madsen originally intended to return to the role. On the same day it was announced that Julia Garner had been cast as the new character Marcy , a young stripper whose paths cross with the new character Johnny . On February 5, it was revealed that Stacy Keach had been cast as the villain Wallenquist .

Gross profit

On its opening weekend in North America, the film only grossed 6.5 million US dollars (while its predecessor Sin City still achieved 29 million dollars on the opening weekend) and was only 8th on the US box office. The film can be described as a flop because it only grossed 39.4 million on a budget of 65 million US dollars. The reasons given in the press are poor marketing, poor reviews and a generally low interest in a sequel after nine years .

Reviews

The film received a moderate to negative reception. At Rotten Tomatoes , 43% of reviews are positive out of a total of 161 reviews; the average rating is 5.4 / 10.

For the film service , the second part was “even more diffuse than the first adaptation”. He is more frightened by “stagnation than bad guys”. While the acting achievements of Josh Brolin and especially Eva Green were highlighted, the rest, “despite all the cameos, is an insignificance inflated with a lot of sex and crime, which is at best partially nice to look at”.

In his blog, film critic Sidney Schering described the film as "stylish and dirty in exactly the right way." He draws the conclusion: "Trash, impressively implemented."
