Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt (born February 17, 1981 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actor and film director .

Private life

Gordon-Levitt was born to a Jewish family in Los Angeles and grew up there in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood . His parents, Dennis Levitt and Jane Gordon, are among the founders of the Progressive Jewish Alliance , an alliance that advocates social justice, better working conditions and the Jewish-Islamic dialogue, among other things. In 2000 he studied history, literature and French poetry at Columbia University in New York City . In 2004 he dropped out of college to focus on his acting career. His older brother Daniel Gordon-Levitt, known by the stage name "Burning Dan", died on October 4, 2010 at the age of 36. His maternal grandfather was the American theater and film actor and director Michael Gordon . Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been married to Tasha McCauley since 2014. Their son was born in 2015.

Career

Gordon-Levitt began his acting career at the age of six and first appeared in television feature films and two episodes in the series Familienbande in the late 1980s . After a leading role in the soap opera Dark Shadows , he made his feature film debut in 1992 as the actor of the young Norman in Robert Redford's literary film adaptation From the middle of a river . For this he was awarded a Young Artist Award . In 1994 he played a Hutterite boy in the comedy Holy Matrimony and a leading role in the Walt Disney film Angels. .

In 2010 he starred in Christopher Nolan's film Inception alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Caine .

In 2012 he played in Christopher Nolan's third Batman film The Dark Knight Rises , the role of John Blake and Steven Spielberg's Lincoln alongside Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis .

In 2013, Gordon-Levitt made his feature film debut as a director and screenwriter with the comedy Don Jon . He also took on the male lead on the side of Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore . He has been directing short films since 2009.

For the shooting of the film The Walk , he learned how to dance tightrope from Philippe Petit , whom he played in this film .

In 2015, he worked with Oliver Stone on the film Snowden , which tells the story of the NSA disclosure scandal surrounding whistleblower Edward Snowden , played by Gordon-Levitt.
