Snowden is a German - American film drama directed by Oliver Stone from 2016 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the eponymous role of Edward Snowden .

action

It tells the true story of CIA and NSA employee and whistleblower Edward Snowden , who flew from Hawaii to Hong Kong in 2013 to distribute thousands of secret documents to the press that make public the existence of American and British intelligence programs that serve the total monitoring of the worldwide internet traffic, including PRISM , Tempora , XKeyscore and Boundless Informant . He thus triggers the global surveillance and espionage affair . This process not only moves the world community, but also international politics has been hit hard, which makes him one of the most wanted men in the world at the moment.

The film describes the gradual change in Snowden's attitude towards the goals and responsibilities of the secret services and the government. His girlfriend, who is critical of US politics, plays an important role in this. At first, he sometimes cannot believe that the secret services are capturing all digital communication. In his increasingly critical stance, he is partially supported directly and indirectly by colleagues who, among other things, witness how, with the Director of National Intelligence, the chief intelligence officer, James R. Clapper, testifies before a congressional committee of the US Senate that not all data are from many millions of US citizens collected.

Snowden bases his actions on his conscience , since the practices of the secret services are incompatible with the US Constitution and human rights , and there is obviously no way to change the system from within. In a conversation with colleagues shortly before his flight to Hong Kong, he mentions the doctrines and jurisprudence of the Nuremberg Principles , according to which even individuals of lower rank have a joint obligation.

Snowden has lived in Moscow since the documents were passed on to the press . At the end of the film, Snowden himself has his say. In the credits some consequences of the worldwide discussion are shown.

production

American studios rejected the script. Much of the filming, which began in Bavaria Studios in February 2015 , took place in Munich. In addition, the film was shot on location in Hong Kong and the USA. The budget was estimated at $ 40 million. The box office totaled $ 37.3 million, making the film one of the biggest flops of the year. The FilmFernsehFonds Bayern funded the film with 1.6 million euros as part of the special program for international co-productions.

After the film release in the US was initially scheduled for December 25, 2015, the release date was postponed to an unspecified date in 2016 and later announced for May 13 (UK) and June 15, 2016 (US and France) . In February 2016, the US release was postponed again, this time to September 16, 2016. In Germany, the film officially opened on September 22, 2016. The premiere took place in Germany on September 20, 2016.
