action

The petty crook Bobby Cooper is on his way to Las Vegas , where he finally wants to repay his gambling debts - so that he does not lose more fingers on his trail through the poultry shears of the rude collectors.

When the radiator hose bursts on his Ford Mustang , he finds a shabby workshop in the sleepy desert town of Superior, Arizona . The operator, however, is anything but happy to have to deal with the customers who have blown in at all, and holds Cooper off with vague promises for hours.

During his forced residency, Bobby soon made the momentous acquaintance of the beautiful and lascivious Grace and her jealous husband Jake. By Jake of a will Schäferstündchen hopeful Bobby first of all beaten and shortly afterwards receives the surprising offer to kill Grace. But Grace also calls on the traveler to put an end to her spouse's life. Bobby, who has now lost all of his money in a robbery, now has to make a decision.

Bobby chooses Grace - he kills Jake and flees Superior with the femme fatale . On the way they are stopped by Sheriff Potter: it turns out that he has a relationship with Grace and also wants money with her and Jakes. He too is killed without further ado. When the two Jakes and Potter's bodies are disposed of in a canyon , Grace turns against Bobby. She pushes him into the abyss, but without knowing that he has wisely taken the car keys. She climbs down to him and realizes that Bobby is not only badly wounded, but also foams with anger. While fighting for the car keys, Grace is strangled by Bobby while she shoots him in the hip in agony. With the last of his strength, he can then climb out of the abyss to the car. When he finally turns the ignition key, the "new" radiator hose installed by the mechanic Darrell bursts. Bobby doesn't even try to drive off with the now uncooled engine, and with a sigh of "Arizona" he slumps his head over the back of the driver's seat in resignation. The soundtrack with which the film opened, "It's a Good Day (for Paying Your Bills)" by Peggy Lee can be heard again .

Reviews

“[…] With the party: Jon Voight as a half-Indian blind beggar, Claire Danes as a young brat and Joaquin Phoenix as a jealous thug. Conclusion: tension, black humor and sex in the desert - Oliver Stone made a 'hot' film. In addition, top staff; we are happy to forgive the bonds with Red Rock West . "

“A small gate on the run is forced to stop in a nightmarishly populated desert kaff by a breakdown. Furiously assembled, totally crazy psychological thriller based on the novel Stray Dogs by John Ridley. "

- VideoLEX

"A furiously pieced together portrait of characters who have fallen apart, which shamelessly exploits scraps of cinema and literary history and finally ends in the bloodbath that is already typical of the genre without having communicated anything relevant."

“Oliver Stone succeeded in creating a great, shrill thriller with a solid pinch of black humor, which shakes the morbid facade of an average place and brings out abnormal games behind the wall of normality. A lot of fun! "
