action

The Miami Sharks football team is in crisis and has already lost three times in a row at the beginning of the story - the play-off participation is in danger. When star quarterback Jack Rooney and his already unsuccessful substitute were injured, the third quarterback Willie Beamen had to play. He can't prevent his fourth defeat in a row, but he improves after some initial difficulties and shows unexpected qualities. However, due to his arrogant manner, he quickly gets problems with the laws of sport. His appearance is shaped by his origins and problems with previous coaches who always misunderstood his talent. Beaming is not able to show humility or to sacrifice himself for his fellow players. He quickly gets into problems with his girlfriend Vanessa, who is leaving him, and head coach Tony D'Amato, because he disregards his instructions, changes moves on his own initiative and always alienates his colleagues. D'Amato himself is also under a lot of pressure as the new team owner Christina Pagniacci, daughter of the late president and loyal friend of D'Amato, is only looking to add value to the team and improve her personal opportunities. In the end, she even toying with the sale of her father's legacy, D'Amato knows that he no longer plays a role in this game and wants to prove to himself in the midst of his midlife crisis that he still has something to bite.

Meanwhile, the team has completely different problems, they lose their last game, the home advantage in the first playoff round and linebacker Luther "Shark" Lavay because of an injury, and the team finally refuses to support Beamen. In addition dopes of operating blind team doctor Harvey Mandrake, which sometimes has more to do to conceal his love affairs before his girlfriend to serve as the team comprehensively, under pressure from the sporting success of his charges with or without their consent. He conceals from economic interests "Shark" and the trainer his serious injury and the associated risk. Pagniacci offers him a raise, should you be able to hire “Shark” on lower terms next year. When D'Amato finds out, he dismisses Mandrake and, once in a rage, knocks down sports reporter Jack Rose, who misses every opportunity to document D'Amato's decline.

Before the game against the Dallas Knights, on top of that the team with the best defense in the league, D'Amato first has to justify his slip to Rose. His hymn of excuse, which he reads boringly, is just as fine a swipe at the laws of the "clean" world of sports, as is the attitude that the new team doctor, Ollie Powers, shows when distributing (medically) superfluous cortisone injections. In a desperate speech, D'Amato tries to unite the quarreling team and has Jack Rooney lead them onto the field. This keeps the team in the game with a touchdown pass and a touchdown that is very unusual for his circumstances. In the second half, D'Amato Beamen comes on, who has apparently finally recognized the importance of his leadership role. With combined forces, the Sharks can win the game in the last second after they have already been denied the decisive touchdown.

During the game, Pagniacci also experiences its purification and that it hardly plays a significant role outside of the Shark microcosm. Similar to beaming, she notices that as a woman you have to develop respect before you can use contacts and make demands. The closing speech by Pagniacci shows how perfectly staged and yet ungrateful resignation speeches are in today's sports business: D'Amato declares his departure himself and cites the feeling of wanting to change himself again after the team in the final of the Pantheon Cup against San as the reason Francisco lost. But D'Amato still has an ace up his sleeve - he will compete in no man's land with a new team that gives him full management control and, to the astonishment and horror of those present, obliges Beamen as his first player.

background

The film is based on a novel by former Dallas Cowboys player , Pat Toomay , who appears in a supporting role in the film.

Notable in Every Fucking Sunday are the guest appearances of a number of American football superstars, such as Dick Butkus and Johnny Unitas as opposing coaches and Terrell Owens as wide receivers of the # 82 Miami Sharks. Some outsiders also became actors such as Jamie Foxx , who until then was only known as a television comedian, the rapper LL Cool J or the bodybuilder Andrew Bryniarski . The US professional football association NFL largely failed to support the project, probably because of the relentless portrayal of the downsides of this sport, so that in some cases it was not allowed to shoot in NFL stadiums. The team names, jerseys and player uniforms also had to be invented. Oliver Stone plays a sports reporter in a cameo .

Old star Charlton Heston also has a brief appearance as commissioner, and TV clips of Ben Hur are shown when D'Amato argues with Beamen about his future as a quarterback.

Trivia

Every bloody Sunday was the first movie since 1986 that Stone didn't shoot with multi- Oscar- winning cinematographer and visual artist Robert Richardson .

criticism

“Using an only seemingly manageable microcosm, which is increasingly being dismembered by the brilliant cinematic narrative style, the film traces the ever faster collapse of a society whose individual parts can hardly be connected to one another. This is reflected in a fast-paced, sometimes downright hysterical production that is an expression of the director's culturally pessimistic attitude. "

“In the end, this stunning Oliver Stone film is arguably one of his most hopeful. It is shot at high speed, in the warm light of Miami, the cameras on the bodies, the cut a turbulent formation, rhythmized by a huge music sample from Hip Hop, Metallica and Indian spiritual. The team spirit in Stone's cast must have been right: everyone plays their role perfectly, no one plays the other. You can rely on coach Al Pacino, he shines with his variant of the philosophy 'Every Inch Counts'. Furious - even if a few Andante pauses wouldn't have hurt, to take a breath. "
