John C. McGinley
John Christopher McGinley (born August 3, 1959 in New York City , New York ) is an American actor , director , producer , screenwriter and author . He was best known as Dr. Perry Cox in the television series Scrubs .
Life
Childhood and youth
McGinley was born to the teacher Patricia and the stockbroker Gerald McGinley in Greenwich Village , New York . His paternal grandfather was originally from Donegal , Ireland . McGinley grew up with his four siblings in Millburn , New Jersey . There he attended Millburn High School , for whose football team he played on the position of wide receiver . McGinley then studied acting at Syracuse University , and later at New York University Tisch School of the Arts . During his apprenticeship, he worked in various areas, including various off-Broadway and Broadway productions and for two years in the soap opera Another World .
Career
McGinley played as John Turturro in 1984 as John Patrick Shanley's production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea , whereupon he attracted some casting scouts to himself and eventually received the role of Sergeant Red O'Neill in the Oscar - winning anti - war film Platoon , in which he was starred alongside Charlie Sheen , Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe . Shortly before, he had made his film debut in Alan Alda's Sweet Liberty . With Wall Street (1987), Talk Radio (1988) and Born on July 4th (1989) followed roles in three other productions by Oliver Stone . McGinley also took part in the celebrity special on the American Gladiators show, where he lost to Dean Cain .
For the Film Club of Liars (1990) John McGinley wrote the script and also took on a supporting role. In the 1990s he starred as a supporting actor in movies such as Dangerous Surf (1991), Highlander II (1991), Wagons East! (1994), Sieben (1995), The Rock (1996), Nix zu Los (1997) and Alles Routine (1999) as well as in a number of television productions.
In 1997, McGinley took on a leading role in Dean Koontz's television thriller Intensity - Alone Against the Killer . He received mostly positive reviews for his role as a serial killer, and Intensity became the most highly rated miniseries on FOX television . In Sole Survivor (2000), McGinley worked again with Koontz and FOX.
In 2001, John C. McGinley took on the role of Dr. Perry Cox in NBC - and later ABC - sitcom Scrubs - The Beginners through which he gained generally high awareness. According to himself, McGinley was instrumental in the development of the character. Among other things, he came up with the idea that Dr. Cox always addresses the protagonist JD by women's names, his whistle and his habit of touching his own nose (a homage to Robert Redford's role in The Clou ).
In 2007, McGinley starred as Chuck opposite Ice Cube in Are We Finished? . He also took a smaller role as a gay patrolman in the Touchstone production Born to be Wild with John Travolta , Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence .
In addition to his work as an actor, John McGinley works as a voice actor for various cartoon series , including The Justice League (original title Justice League Unlimited ), The Boondocks , WordGirl and Superman / Batman: Public Enemies . He also dubbed the main character in the English original of the PlayStation Portable game Dead Head Fred . He also worked as a spokesperson in various US commercials and documentaries .
John McGinley's German dubbing voice in Scrubs and recent productions is Bernd Vollbrecht ; previously it was adopted by a large number of different speakers.
In 2005, John C. McGinley published the guide Untalkative Bunny: How to Be Heard Without Saying a Word, his first book author.
Private life
In 1997 he married. In the same year his son was born with Down syndrome , whereupon McGinley became actively involved in the National Down Syndrome Society , whose spokesman he has been since 2006. In 2001, McGinley divorced. On April 7, 2007, he married a yoga teacher at a private ceremony at home. He has had a daughter with this since January 2008, and another daughter followed in 2010. The family lives in Malibu , California . McGinley is a member of the so-called "Malibu Mob", a group of prominent friends and neighbors, including the actors there John Cusack and Tony Danza and former hockey defender Chris Chelios , surfer Laird Hamilton , beach volleyball -Profi Gabrielle Reece and tennis player John McEnroe belong.
With his colleague Willem Dafoe , John C. McGinley ran the “Match” bistro in New York's trendy Soho district . He is also a close friend of John Cusack .
McGinley, like his character Dr. Cox in Scrubs avowed fan of the Detroit Red Wings ice hockey team .
