action

The oil company Aegis is indifferent to Alaska's beautiful environment and its nature-loving locals. The interest is to achieve the maximum profit. The president of the company Michael Jennings also accepts the loss of human life. His latest project is called Aegis 1 - a huge drilling rig and refinery that is being built in a sensitive ecosystem.

When there was a fire on a derrick during construction, fire fighting specialist Forrest Taft was called. After successfully carrying out a precision blast, Taft talks to his old friend and foreman Hugh Palmer, who attributes the near-disaster to inadequate security locks. The next day, Taft uses his key to the company's internal database and sees that Palmer was right. The reasons for the use of cheap material were delays in delivery of the original parts and a deadline that Jennings had to meet. If the construction of Aegis 1 was not completed in time, the drilling rights would return to the ownership of the Alaskan natives.

Taft confronts Jennings with these facts, who puts his henchmen MacGruder and Otto on Taft and Palmer. Palmer, who tried to send further records to the environmental agency, is tortured to death by the two of them. But they cannot find the stolen data. They attempt an attack on Taft with an explosive device, in which Taft is seriously injured. Thanks to Silook, the chief of a tribe of the Iñupiat and his daughter Masu, Taft is saved and can recover in her village. During his recovery, through spiritual experiences , Taft learns what humanity is doing to nature and Jennings must be stopped. Meanwhile, MacGruder flies to the village to look for Taft. When meeting the natives, the situation escalates and MacGruder shoots Silook.

Taft then sets off with Masu to Palmer's house. Looking around, he is attacked by Otto and some of Jenning's people, but manages to kill them all. In the house, Taft finds the disk that MacGruder was unable to secure. When analyzing the parameters, he notices that Aegis 1 would never withstand the pressure and comes to the conclusion that the entire system must be blown up before it goes into operation. This would prevent the oil from leaking and an ecological catastrophe.

To stop Taft, Jennings hires mercenaries whose connections extend as far as Washington . They find out that Taft - before he worked for Jennings - was employed by the secret services to train task forces and therefore has sufficient experience in handling weapons, explosives and self-defense. They hunt him through the Alaskan wilderness, but cannot stop him from continuing to Aegis 1. On the contrary: when booby-traps are set, they lose several people and the helicopter for air support.

Jennings then holed up with his people, the rest of the mercenaries, MacGruder and even anti-terrorist agents from the FBI at Aegis 1. Taft eliminates everyone who gets in his way and lays explosive devices on the entire area. When the first detonate, the rest of Jennings' workers and the FBI flee. Only Jennings remains to start the pump and secure his rights. Taft first kills MacGruder by thrusting him into the rotor blades of a helicopter and later also kills Jennings by drowning him in his own oil. Further explosions on Aegis 1 cause a chain reaction that completely destroys the entire facility. Taft and Masu - who accompanied him the whole time - managed to get to safety beforehand.

At the end you see Taft - far from being charged with murder or sabotage - giving a speech in front of a crowd in which he warns about pollution and unscrupulous corporations like Aegis. In a mid-credits scene , Taft and Masu are on a lake in a canoe and the ghost of Silook appears to them in the form of a raven.

criticism

"Mixture of action thriller and eco-westerns with terrific nature shots. Hero worship and the justification of violence are hypocritically cloaked with ecological motives. "

Awards

Steven Seagal was awarded a Golden Raspberry for Worst Director in 1995. The film was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in five other categories.
