action

Michael Burgess is a history professor at Sayeville Town College. His award-winning book on the American Revolutionary War is about to be made into a film. Michael is in a relationship with Professor Gretchen Carlsen, who, unlike Michael, would like to marry. The film team arrives in town to begin filming. As Michael reads the script, he is shocked that the screenwriter Stanley Gould turned historical facts into a shallow comedy. Stanley begs Michael to work with him on the script. The professor is ravished by the leading actress Faith Healy. As a method acting actress, she enchants Michael with her role, not with her true personality. Michael and Gretchen then split up. Stanley and Michael immediately pass their twist changes on to Faith and male lead actor Elliott James. Both convince the director Bo Hodges to work with the new material. Michael sleeps with Faith and is horrified when she also spends a night with the married Elliot a short time later, only to increase the screen presence in scenes together. Due to the director's lack of interest in sticking to historical facts, Michael feels compelled to instigate a mutiny with local extras that ruins a whole day's shooting. When the film team leaves town after filming is over, Michael and Gretchen get together again. Both learned to compromise and decide to get married. On the day the film premieres, Gretchen is pregnant.

Reviews

“Accurate satire with swipes at the marketing strategies of the American film industry. Remarkably played and complex in the description of human relationships, but not consistent enough in the critical attitude. "

"The film tries to get too many characters at the same time and loses sight of the most interesting ones."

"Mr. Alda does not look at the world through the periscope of a Hollywood filmmaker. He sees them completely, more or less like all of us who take the subway and read newspapers and books without paying attention to a marketing value. "

Remarks

The film was shot in various locations on Long Island , USA and Canada . It grossed approximately $ 12.7 million in US cinemas . The day of the first performance in the FRG was September 4, 1986.
