history
Originally Malibu was a part of the territory of the Chumash - Indians . It was called Humaliwo ( "The surf sounds loud" ). The Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is said to have created Malibu Lagoon in the center of Malibu Creek in 1542 to get drinking water for his journey north.
In 1802 the Spanish settler José Bartolomé Tapia settled in Malibu. He built a ranch and a large quarry in Malibu Canyon. These facilities comprised 13,300 acres of land and soon came to be known as Rancho Topanga Malibu Simi Sequit. After changing hands several times, the ranch was sold for $ 300,000 in 1892. The buyer, Frederick Hastings Rindge († 1905) and his wife, Rhoda May Rindge, tried diligently to protect their property, which they soon expanded to 17,000 acres, and to prevent any intrusion. They also fought against the construction of a South Pacific railway line that would run through Malibu. Nonetheless, the state won a lawsuit against Rhoda May Rindge in 1929, which enabled the construction of an expressway now known as the Pacific Coast Highway . Rindge had to split up their property and began selling and leasing properties. The Rindge House, also known as the Adamson House, is now part of Malibu Creek State Park and is located between Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach and right next to the Malibu Pier, which was originally built for the family yacht.
In order to prevent the sale of land and avert bankruptcy, Rhoda May Rindge founded a small ceramic brick factory in 1926. In their prime, the Malibu Potteries employed over 100 workers and produced decorative tiles that are used in many public buildings and residences in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills . In 1931, the factory, half a mile east of Malibu Pier, was destroyed by fire. Although the factory was partially reopened in 1932, she could not from the effects of that to the world economic crisis recovery and the sharp decline in construction projects in Southern California. The tiles from the Malibu Potteries are still coveted collectibles. Excellent examples of the tiles can be viewed at the Adamson House or at the Serra Retreat, a fifty-room property that began construction in 1920. It was supposed to be the home of the Rindge family and is on a hill overlooking the entire lagoon. The incomplete building was sold to the Franciscan Order in 1942 and is used as a place of retreat. It burned down in 1970 and was rebuilt using the original bricks.
In 1991, Malibu became a separate city after long being incorporated into the Los Angeles County region . Although the museum is referred to as The Getty Villa Malibu , it is located east of Malibu in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood , which is still part of Los Angeles .
Malibu, like other parts of California, has been repeatedly hit by forest fires. Climate scientists assume that the risk of forest fires will continue to increase in the context of climate change . In January, October and November 2007, numerous celebrity mansions in Malibu burned down in the southern California forest fires .
In the wake of the devastating forest fires in 2018 , the evacuation of Malibu was officially ordered on November 9, 2018. Several prominent houses were also destroyed in these fires, including the property of the television presenter Thomas Gottschalk , the singer Miley Cyrus and the actor Gerard Butler .
geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , Malibu has an area of 261.5 km² , of which 51.5 km² is land and 210 km² is water. The high proportion of water area of around 80% is due to the fact that the city limits extend three miles into the ocean.
Because of its unique geographical location, Malibu has always been the victim of natural disasters such as floods, fires and mudslides .
A common misconception is that Malibu's coast runs north to south. However, Malibu is located in Santa Monica Bay at a point where the coast runs in an east-west direction, just like the Pacific Coast Highway. The Pacific Ocean is to the south and the Santa Monica Mountains to the north of this neighborhood.
Surfrider Beach , Broad Beach , Pirate's Cove , Zuma Beach and Trancas are locations along the Malibu coast. Point Dume State Beach is the northern end of Santa Monica Bay , and the public park there offers views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Santa Catalina Island .
