The Santa Monica Mountains are a mountain range north of Santa Monica in southern California . The mountain range extends for 40 miles in a west-east direction from Point Mugu in Ventura County to the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles . Mulholland Drive runs on the back of the mountain range . There is also the most photographed mountain in California, Mount Lee , on the south side of which the Hollywood sign is mounted.
The highest peaks of the Santa Monica Mountains are the Sandstone Peak , also called Mount Allan , with 948 m, the Tri-Peaks with 917 m and the Exchange Peak with 899 m. The mountain's ecosystem is home to a variety of different species, including rainbow trout and a few puma . Much of the mountain range is part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area , a National Recreation Area .
There are over 1,000 archaeological sites in the Santa Monica Mountains, most of them from the Tongva and Chumash .
