Ventura County is a county in the southern part of the US state California . The county seat is in Ventura .
history
For thousands of years the area was home to the Chumash Indians . In 1782 the San Buenaventura mission station was founded. Buenaventura is made up of the two Spanish words buena (which means “good”) and ventura (which means “fate”). The city that arose near the mission was called San Buenaventura . In 1872, Ventura County was created by demarcating the southern portion of Santa Barbara County .
Ventura County has a National Historic Landmark , Rancho Camulos . A total of 36 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
geography
The county covers an area of 5719 square kilometers. Of this, 940 square kilometers (16.43 percent of the total area) are water surfaces. It lies on the Pacific coast and is part of the metropolitan area of Los Angeles . The Anacapa Island of the Channel Islands National Park and the San Nicolas Island belong to the county. The north is quite mountainous, forested, and mostly uninhabited, while the south is heavily populated. The county is bordered by Santa Barbara Counties , Los Angeles Counties, and Kern Counties .
The county's highest mountains are Mount Pinos (2,697 meters), Frazier Mountain (2,444 meters), and Reyes Peak (2,294 meters), all in the Transverse Ranges .

According to the 2000 census , Ventura County had a population of 753,197. There were 243,234 households and 182,911 families. The population density was 158 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.93% White, 1.95% African American, 0.94% Native American, 5.35% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, and 17.68% other races Groups; 3.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 33.42% of the population.
Of the 243,234 households, 39.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.50% were married couples living together, 10.90% were single mothers. 24.80% were not families. 18.90% were single households and 7.40% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was 3.46 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.40% of residents under 18 years of age, 9.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 99.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 59,666 , and the median income for a family is $ 65,285. Males had a median income of $ 45,310 versus $ 32,216 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,600. 9.20% percent of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. 11.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.30% were 65 years of age or older.
