Butte County is a county in the north of the US state California . The county seat is Oroville .

Butte (from English butte - pointed tip ) is derived from a hill with a pointed tip , which is located in the southern part of the county. Largest city is Chico with 73,558 inhabitants, a university town with California State University, Chico . It's in the north of the county.

Butte is rural. About 1.5  hours by car south is Sacramento , the capital of the state of California.

According to the 2000 census , Butte County's population was 203,171. There were 79,566 households and 49,410 families. The population density was 48 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.52% White, 1.39% African American, 1.90% Native American, 3.32% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, and 4.82% other races Groups; 3.90% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 10.50% of the population.

Of the 79,566 households, 28.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 46.70% were married couples living together, 11.20% were single mothers. 37.90% were not families. 27.20% were single households and 11.10% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.00% residents under 18 years of age, 13.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,924 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,010. Males had a median income of $ 34,137 versus $ 25,393 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,517. 19.80% percent of the population and 12.20% of families are below the poverty line. 23.80% of them were under 18 years of age and 7.30% were 65 years of age or older.
