The Inyo County is a county in the east of the US state of California . The county seat is Independence .

geography

Inyo County lies between the ridge of the Sierra Nevada with, among others, the Mount Whitney to the west and the border with Nevada in the east. In between lies the Owens Valley of the Owens River , which stretches from northwest to southeast and is home to all of the county's significant settlements. The valley is accessed by US Highway 395 .

The Death Valley National Park , Badwater with than the lowest point of America, located in the east of the county and accounts for almost half of its surface. The portions of the count in the Sierra Nevada as well as part of the Inyo Mountains and the White Mountains belong to the Inyo National Forest , a national forest under the administration of the US Forest Service . Parts of the National Forest in the Sierra are designated as the John Muir Wilderness , Golden Trout Wilderness and South Sierra Wilderness as Wilderness Area , the sharpest class of nature reserves in the United States.

In the south, large parts of the US Navy 's training area extend into the county from China Lake Naval Weapons Center .

In the county are Mount Whitney and Badwater, both the highest mountain in the United States outside of Alaska and the lowest point in America.

The Inyo County in 1866 from parts of the Mono County and Tulare county formed and, after the Inyo Mountains named.

During the Second World War 10,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans were interned at the Manzanar War Relocation Center between Independence and Lone Pine.

Inyo County has a National Historic Landmark , the Coso Rock Art District . 16 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Inyo County had a population of 17,945 people as of the 2000 census . There were 7,703 households and 4,937 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.06% White, 0.16% African American, 10.04% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 4.60% other races Groups; 4.15% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.58% of the population.

Of the 7,703 households, 27.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.80% were married couples living together, 9.90% were single mothers. 35.90% were not families. 31.40% were single households and 13.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.40% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,006 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,970. Males had a median income of $ 37,270 versus $ 25,549 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,639. 12.60% percent of the population and 9.30% of families are below the poverty line. 16.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.30% were 65 years of age or older.
