history
Sutter County was one of California's founding counties in 1850. Parts of it were ceded to Placer County in 1851 .
Sutter County was named after General Johann August Sutter , a settler of Swiss descent who was awarded large estates by the Mexican government and named his first settlement New Helvetia (today's Sacramento). In 1841 the general built a large ranch ( Hock Farm ) in this area , to which he withdrew impoverished in 1850 when gold prospectors robbed him of his property during the gold rush .
On March 14, 1961, a B-52 bomber with nuclear weapons on board lost cabin pressure and had to go down to 3000 m. Due to the increased fuel consumption, he no longer reached his destination and crash-landed near Yuba City, with the plane and the two bombs crashing. The series of such incidents led US President John F. Kennedy to improve the security interlocks on the bombs during the Cold War.
The county's only entry on the National Register of Historic Places is the Live Oak Historic Commercial District .
