Lake County is a county in the state of California in the United States . The county seat is Lakeport .

history

Lake County was formed from parts of Napa County in 1861 . The county's name comes from the large number of lakes in the area, the most famous of which is Clear Lake .

Lake County has a National Historic Landmark , the Borax Lake Site . 6 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Lake County's population of 58,309 was as of the 2000 census . There were 23,974 households and 15,367 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.25% White, 2.11% African American, 3.04% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, and 4.11% other races Groups; 3.50% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.39% of the population.

Of the 23,974 households, 26.60% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 47.70% were married couples living together, 11.30% were single mothers. 35.90% were not families. 29.00% were single households and 13.40% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.10% residents under 18 years of age, 6.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 97.60 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,627 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,818. Males had a median income of $ 35,771 versus $ 24,026 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,825. 17.60% percent of the population and 12.90% of families are below the poverty line. 22.80% of these were under 18 years of age and 7.30% were 65 years of age or older.
