Alpine County is the lowest numbered county in the state of California in the United States . Parts of the Sierra Nevada are located in Alpine County . The county seat is Markleeville .
history
The county was formed in 1864 from Amador County , El Dorado County , Calaveras County, and Tuolumne Counties . The county attracted attention in the late 1970s when far-right members of the Posse Comitatus tried unsuccessfully to take power in the county
Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Alpine County's population was 1,208. There were 483 households and 295 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.68% White, 0.58% African American, 18.87% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 1.41% other races Groups; 5.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.78% of the population.
Of the 483 households, 25.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 43.90% were married couples living together, 11.00% were single mothers. 38.90% were not families. 27.70% were single households and 5.40% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.80% residents under 18 years of age, 10.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 29.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 110.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 117.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,875 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,250. Males had a median income of $ 36,544 versus $ 25,800 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,431. 19.50% percent of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. 27.40% of them were under 18 years of age and 10.10% were 65 years of age or older.
