The Sierra County is a county in the US - State of California . The county seat is Downieville .

The county is located in the Sierra Nevada in the US state of California northeast of Sacramento , on the border with Nevada and has a total area of 2,491 square kilometers. Of this, 22 square kilometers (0.89 percent) are water. It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Plumas County , Lassen County , Washoe County , Nevada County, and Yuba County .

Sierra County was formed in 1852 from parts of Yuba County . The county takes its name from the Sierra Nevada.

The Sierra County population was 3555 people as of the 2000 census . There were 1,520 households and 986 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.18% White, 0.20% African American, 1.88% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 1.04% other races Groups; 2.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.99% of the population.

Of the 1,520 households, 27.60% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.10% were married couples living together, 7.90% were single mothers. 35.10% were not families. 29.00% were single households and 11.50% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
