Hendrina Stenmanns ( religious name Mother Josefa, born May 28, 1852 in Issum , † May 20, 1903 in Steyl / Netherlands ) was a Catholic sister of German origin and co-founder of the order " Missionary Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Spirit ". It was on June 29, 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. beatified .

life and work

Childhood and youth

Hendrina Stenmanns was the eldest of seven children to the parents Wilhelm Franz Stenmanns (* 1821; † 1887) and Anna Maria Wallboom (* 1825; † December 1, 1878). In the spring of 1858 she started school in the Catholic elementary school. On August 22, 1867 she was the auxiliary bishop of Muenster John Boßmann received Confirmation . Hendrina Stenmanns wanted to become a Franciscan - following the example of an aunt. At the age of 19 she joined the Franciscan Movement in the monastery of St. Bernardin in Kapellen . In 1875, during the Kulturkampf , the monastery was dissolved; she was no longer able to enter. After her mother's death in 1878, Hendrina Stenmanns looked after her father and siblings.

Steyl

Hendrina Stenmanns traveled to Steyl for the first time when she visited a former apprentice of her father at Pentecost 1879 and took part in the 40-hour prayer of the religious order. After that she drove to Steyl every year before moving there on February 12, 1884 . She worked as a kitchen helper in the mission house of the Society of the Divine Word (Societas Verbi Divini) founded by Arnold Janssen . Together with Helena Stollenwerk and other sisters, she moved into the new monastery on December 8, 1889 . She is considered to be the co-founder of the Servants of the Holy Spirit (Congregatio Missionalis Servarum Spiritus Sancti).

Hendrina Stenmanns made her temporary vows in 1894 . Two years later she was elected superior of the community, replacing Helena Stollenwerk, who switched to the branch of the Adoration Sisters. On September 11, 1895, she accompanied sisters on their first foundation in Argentina . She made her perpetual profession on December 8, 1901 . The formation of the new missionary sisters was their responsibility. Her own desire to go on a mission remained unfulfilled. Hendrina Stenmanns died on May 20, 1903 of a lung disease and is buried in the Steyler monastery cemetery. A small memorial plaque is attached to her parents' house on the Nordring in Issum.

As a necessary miracle for beatification, Pope Benedict XVI. Confirmed: In 1985 a young man in Brazil was dying after an appendectomy with complications from irreversible shock. A nurse prayed to mother Josefa. Inexplicably for the doctors, the man is said to have recovered within a few seconds.
