- 1037 : The Constitutio de feudis issued by Emperor Konrad II allows the lower nobility to inherit fiefdoms in imperial Italy .
- 1172 : The Venetian doge Vitale Michiel II is stabbed to death by Marco Casolo in the lagoon city near the church of San Zaccaria . The Doge is assumed to be responsible for the defeat in a campaign of revenge against Byzantium .
- 1259 : England's King Henry III. recognizes the loss of continental possessions in the Treaty of Paris .
