Garland Arthur Grange (* 2. December 1906 in Forksville , Pennsylvania ; † 28. May 1981 in Miami , Florida ), nicknamed : "Gardie" or "Pinkey" was a US American football poker players and - coach . He played, among other things, as an end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Chicago Bears .

Garland Grange was born in Forksville, the younger brother of Red Grange . Born the child of a foreman at a logging camp , Grange first grew up in Pennsylvania. He had two other brothers. After his family moved to Wheaton , Illinois , his father became the city's police chief . His mother died when he was four years old and he and his brothers were raised by his father. In high school he played as a haflback on the school team.

Player career

Gardie Grange studied from 1925 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . He played for their football team as an end and was honored by his college for his athletic achievements in 1927 . That year he was also voted into the league selection by the American press. In 1929 he was hired by the Chicago Bears, who were trained by George Halas . In the same year, the Bears were also able to tie Red to the team. After three years playing in Chicago , Garland Grange retired from the Bears and became player-coach for the St. Louis Veterans and the Memphis Tigers. Both teams did not belong to any league.
