George Stanley Halas (born February 2, 1895 in Chicago , Illinois , † October 31, 1983 ), nickname : Papa Bear or Mr. Everything , was an American baseball and American football player, coach and owner of the National Football League teams Chicago Bears from 1920 until his death in 1983. His daughter Virginia then became the owner of the franchise and is still the main owner to this day.

Halas graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . During World War I he served in the US Navy and played with a Navy football team in 1919 at the Rose Bowl against another Navy team. Halas' team won the game. He himself was voted the game's Most Valuable Player .

From 1920 to 1928 Halas played as a defensive end and as an end with the Bears. At the same time he trained this team. In his 40-year coaching career, he won eight NFL championship titles as a coach (1921, 1932 to 1933, 1940 to 1941, 1943, 1946 and 1963). Halas had great success with the introduction of the T-formation with quarterback Sid Luckman .

Halas has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 1963 . The NFC Championships trophy is also named after him.

The Chicago Bears still wear their initials GSH on their shirt sleeves.
