Daniel Oliver Hampton (born September 19, 1957 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) is a retired American football player in the position of defensive tackles and defensive ends . Playing exclusively for the Chicago Bears , he became known in the mid-1980s when he was a significant part of the league's most dominant defense and contributed to winning Super Bowl XX . For his services as a player, Hampton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

college

Hampton played college football at the University of Arkansas and was part of the Razorback team that beat the Oklahoma Sooners in the 1978 Orange Bowl by 31: 6 points. In 1978 he had 98 tackles , 18 of them behind the line of scrimmage , and became an All-American . He made a total of 237 tackles during his college career. He was elected to the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor in 1991 and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame the following year .

NFL

Hampton was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft 1979 in fourth place by the Chicago Bears and signed on June 27, 1979 a four-year contract worth 470,000 dollars, which included a signature bonus of 160,000 dollars. In 1980 he was elected to the second team All-Pro and took part in the Pro Bowl for the first time after he had recorded 11½ sacks for the Bears . Because of his combative style of play, he was nicknamed Danimal . On July 15, 1983, he signed a new, $ 1 million, three-year contract that made him the highest paid player of the Bears after Walter Payton .

He took part in the Pro Bowl four times over the course of the decade . In the 1985 season he was an elementary member of Buddy Ryan's legendary 46 Defense , which played a decisive role in ensuring that the Bears, led by Head Coach Mike Ditka , only lost one game in the regular season and not a single game in the subsequent Divisional Playoffs and Conference Championships Cashed point. In Super Bowl XX , Hampton celebrated a never-endangered 46:10 victory with the Bears against the New England Patriots . As early as November 1985, he had signed a new four-year contract worth $ 2.7 million. He did not take part in the Super Bowl Shuffle , a rap song that some Bears players recorded in the middle of the 1985 season to announce their own Super Bowl victory, because he found it too arrogant.

Hampton was an extremely versatile defender who was elected all-pro in two positions (defensive end and defensive tackle). He was a total of six times (1980, 1982, 1984-1986, 1988) part of the first or second team All-Pro. His versatility likely cost him more Pro Bowl nominations. For example, he was a substitute at the 1986 Pro Bowl in both the defensive end and defensive tackle positions. The fact that he mastered both positions so well probably split the voices of his NFC colleagues. Hampton was also a substitute for the Pro Bowl in 1988 and was named the Bears' Best Defender that season, despite Mike Singletary being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

During Hamptons time in Chicago (1979-1990) the defense of the Bears ranked unchallenged at No. 1 in the NFL; it allowed the fewest rushing yards, the fewest rushing touchdowns, the fewest total yards and the fewest points and also achieved the most sacks.

During his football career, Hampton had a total of eight knee operations (four on each knee). He underwent two more shortly after playing his 12th and final NFL season. He is carried by the NFL with 57 career sacks. His season highs are 11½ sacks in the seasons 1980 (as defensive end) and 1984 (as defensive tackle). When his contract expired after the 1989 season, he signed with the Bears one last time a one-year contract with a maximum salary of one million dollars. In the 1990 season , he completed 14 of 16 games and cashed $ 850,000. After the season, he retired and was elected to the NFL All Decade team of the 1980s .

In 2002, Hampton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame . His class included George Allen , Dave Casper , Jim Kelly and John Stallworth .
