John Allen "Hog" Hannah (born April 4, 1951 in Canton , Georgia ) is an American former American football player . From 1973 to 1985 he played as a left guard for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL). Hannah was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the first Patriots player in 1991 .

Childhood and youth

Hannah was born in Canton , Georgia in 1951 to former NFL player Herbert Hannah . He grew up in Albertville , Alabama , and later went to Baylor School in Chattanooga , Tennessee . In 1967 he won a national wrestling tournament .

college

Hannah played from 1970 to 1972 in the position of tackle and guard at the University of Alabama . He was also an active wrestler and discus thrower while in college . Hannah was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999 .

NFL

Hannah was selected by the New England Patriots in 1973 as the fourth player in the NFL Draft . There he spent his entire NFL career. Hannah started in the first 13 games of his rookie season in 1973 before missing the final game of the season due to a leg injury. Together with tackle Leon Gray , he formed one of the best guard / tackle teams in the NFL of the mid and late 1970s. Hannah set 1978 with 3,165 erlaufenen yards an existing record for offensive linemen on. He only missed five games in his career due to injury. In 1985 the Patriots won the American Football Conference (AFC) for the first time with Hannah and therefore moved into the Super Bowl for the first time . After losing Super Bowl XX , Hannah resigned.

Hannah was nominated for the Pro Bowl nine times during his career . He is one of the few players who was elected to two All-Decade teams ( NFL 1970s All-Decade Team and NFL 1980s All-Decade Team ). Hannah was also chosen as the first guard in the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team .

In 1991 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the first Patriots player . He and Andre Tippett are the only members who have spent their entire professional career with the Patriots.

Coaching career

Hannah began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts , which he left in 2004 to become head coach at Somerville High School in Massachusetts. After a season without a win, he became an assistant coach at the Baylor School in Chattanooga , Tennessee , a job he gave up after just one season.

Private

Hannah's brothers Charley and David were also All-Conference Line players for the University of Alabama . Charley Hannah played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Raiders in the NFL from 1977 to 1988 . Charley won Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders .
