Rookie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A rookie is an athlete who is still inexperienced in professional sport . The term is used in US sports ( basketball , ice hockey , American football , baseball , soccer ). This is where hopeful and talented college or high school players join the ranks of the National Basketball Association - (NBA), National Hockey League - (NHL), National Football League - (NFL), Major League Baseball - (MLB), and Major League Soccer teams (MLS) added ( drafted ) in which they complete their first professional season as a rookie.

At the end of a season, the best “newcomer” is named Rookie of the Year . In the NBA, the ten best rookies of the current season play against the ten best sophomores (players in their second professional year) in the rookie challenge , which takes place as part of the NBA All-Star Games .

The term rookie is used not only in the USA and not exclusively in the sports mentioned above, but also, for example, in lacrosse , paintball or snowboarding . The term rookie is also used in Formula 1 and MotoGP. Beginners are also given the same name for model pilots, especially jet pilots with kerosene turbines.

The term is also used by the North American police and is reflected in the title of the Canadian series Rookie Blue , the US film Rookie - The Beginner and the US series The Rookie .

The word is used - with the same meaning as mentioned above ("Neuling, Beginners, Frischling") - also in the German hip-hop and rap scene . Above all, it refers to young artists who present their music to the public on the Internet and without a contract. Examples are Olson Rough and formerly the rapper Vega , who uses the expression himself, for example in Not more festive (feat. Kid Kobra): "Kinderrookies".

etymology

The Oxford English Dictionary states the origin of the word as uncertain, but suspects a corruption of "recruit". So a rookie in sport would be a “newly recruited” player.
