Manfred Bietak
Manfred Bietak (* 6. October 1940 in Vienna ) is an emeritus professor of Egyptology at the University of Vienna and was from 1973 to 2009 head of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo , from 1986 to 2010 head of the Institute of Egyptology at the University of Vienna, from 2004 to 2011 Director of the Vienna Institute of Archaeological Science at the University of Vienna and Chairman of the Commission for Egypt and Levant at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and from 1999 to 2011 Principal Investigator and Head of the Special Research AreaSCIEM 2000 at this academy at the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research . from 2016 to 2020 he is Principal Investigator and Head of the ERC Advanced Grant The Enigma of the Hyksos at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Life
Manfred Bietak studied archeology in Vienna. From 1961 to 1965 he took part in the UNESCO campaign to save the Nubian antiquities in Sayala . In the eastern Nile Delta, Bietak identified the Hyksos capital Auaris and the Ramses city Pi-Ramesse, among others . The uncovering of a palace from the Tuthmosid period with Minoan wall paintings was particularly important . This was probably part of the large military and naval station of Thutmose III. and Amenophis II. From 1966 to 2009 Manfred Bietak directed the excavations of Tell el-Dab'a (Auaris). From 1969 to 1978 he was the excavation manager in Thebes-West .
From 1966 to 1981 Bietak held the position of scientific secretary at the cultural section of the Austrian embassy in Cairo. In 1973 he became scientific advisor and has since headed the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo. From 1981 he was an associate professor at the University of Vienna, and from 1989 a full professor. In 1997 and 2006 he was visiting professor at the Collège de France and in 2004 at Harvard University . From March 1, 1999 he was the first spokesperson for the special research area Synchronization of Civilizations in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Second Millennium BC (SCIEM 2000) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences at the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF). From 2004 to 2011 Bietak was Director of the Vienna Institute of Archaeological Sciences at the University of Vienna.
In 2015, Bietak received the ERC Advanced Grant The Hyksos Enigma from the European Research Council and has since headed this project, which is located at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. This project investigates the origin of a West Asian population in Egypt that caused the rise of the Hyksos dynasty, the nature of the Hyksos rule, the causes of the decline and the impact of the Hyksos on the Egyptian culture of the New Kingdom. This project is carried out jointly with Bournemouth University , UK, and the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities .
Bietak has two brothers: the eldest Dieter (* 1937) is a classical jazz trumpeter, the youngest Wilhelm (* 1947) took part in several Olympic Games as a multiple Austrian champion in pair skating.

- In 2010, on the World Heritage Day of the ICOMOS monument protection organization , Bietak received a Medal of Honor from the Republic of Egypt for his research achievements in Tell el-Dab'a in the eastern Nile Delta.
