The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) is a US non-profit organization for the advancement of archeology based in Boston and New York .

The goals are to promote public interest in archeology, to inform and educate interested laypeople, to support scientific research in all archaeological disciplines and to preserve archaeological sites worldwide.

history

The association was founded in 1879. Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), who was a professor at Harvard University , became the first president. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens was founded in 1882 at the instigation of the AIA , the American School of Classical Studies in Rome in 1895 , and the American School for Oriental Study and Research in Jerusalem in 1899 .

The association has around 200,000 members. The current president is Jodi Magness (as of July 2018).

The Annual Meeting , co-organized with the Society for Classical Studies , is the oldest and most popular conference for Classical Archeology and Philology in North America.

The actor Harrison Ford , who played the famous fictional archaeologist Indiana Jones in the film series of the same name, is the curator of the AIA and supports the organization through public appearances.

Publications

The AIA has published the quarterly American Journal of Archeology since 1885 . The popular scientific journal Archeology has been published every two months since 1948 . The magazine Dig has been published since 1999 and presents archaeological topics for children between the ages of eight and 13.
