Rookie Blue is a Canadian police series produced by E1 Entertainment and Thump, Inc. on behalf of CanWest . In Germany, the first four seasons have so far been shown on 13th Street Universal .

In October 2015, the Canadian production company Shaw Media announced the discontinuation of the series after six seasons.

action

The series shows the everyday life of five police officers from the fictional 15th district, who come straight from the police academy and have to prove themselves. Both their first missions on the road and their relationships with each other are shown. The focus is on Andy McNally, but the relationships and assignments of the other beginners ( English rookies ) are also considered.

The series is dubbed Grey's Anatomy in the cop world. The main character Andy McNally is described as Meredith Gray in uniform, accordingly Rookie Blue is also referred to as Flashpoint or The Bridge for a female audience.

production

The series was developed by Thump Inc. and is jointly produced with E1 Entertainment on behalf of CanWest . The series was developed by Tassie Cameron, Morwyn Brebner and Ellen Vanstone. CanWest promoted the pilot of the series through a large national multimedia marketing campaign. The script for the pilot episode was written by Ilana Frank. In February 2009, for the CanWest transmitter Global TV a 13-part first season under former title "Copper" ordered. ABC became aware of the series even before it was broadcast and in April 2009 secured the broadcasting rights for the USA. This allows Rookie Blue to fall back on an increased budget. This can be seen, among other things, from the fact that the television series was shot on 35 mm film and that more money was available for sound, music, equipment, extras and recordings from helicopters.

First, the role was Andy McNally with Missy Peregrym occupied, followed Gregory Smith as Dov Epstein . The remaining cast members were announced in early July 2009.

Production of the first season began in Toronto , Ontario on July 14, 2009 and continued through November 2009. Tassie Cameron is the screenwriter and show runner . After only three episodes broadcast, ABC ordered a second season on July 12, 2010. Filming for the second season began in early September 2010 and ended in February 2011. On July 10, again after the first three episodes of the second season had aired, Missy Peregrym announced that the series would have a third season. This was officially confirmed by ABC three days later . Filming of the third season began on August 22, 2011. On June 26, 2012, after the broadcast of the first three episodes, the series was extended for a fourth season. On July 18, 2013, ABC and Global TV announced the production of a fifth season.

Toronto Police vehicle

It took seven days to shoot an episode. A real cop was on set the entire time, overseeing the scenes and giving advice. In addition, the actors received a day of training from real officers who, for example, explained the use of weapons and handcuffs.

Rookie Blue was the first television series to be premiered with audio description . The Canadian broadcaster The Accessible Channel , which launched in 2009 specifically for the visually and hearing impaired, broadcast the series synchronously with Global TV and ABC .

Locations

The series was shot in Toronto. Although Toronto was never mentioned as a location for the series, local street names such as " King Street " or "Jameson Avenue" were used for shooting . The film was shot entirely in Toronto, but especially in the eastern part of the of skyscrapers embossed Downtown area of 51 mining area. Characteristic of the series are camera pans over the city skyline , which were filmed from helicopters.

First season

The series started on June 24, 2010 in Canada on Global TV and simultaneously in the USA on ABC . In Canada, the Rookie Blue pilot landed in first place for the evening and in second place for the entire week with a total of 1.9 million and 712,000 viewers in the target group from 18 to 49 years of age. It is the best start of a Canwest drama series in the last five years. 7.24 million viewers followed the pilot episode in the USA. The start of the series was therefore the most successful script-based series start for ABC in over a year.

The further weekly broadcast of the first season on Thursdays at 9 p.m. was also positive, with an average of over 6 million viewers in the USA and over 1.5 million viewers in Canada watching the series, albeit with a downward trend. The series was able to achieve good ratings, especially in the main target group of 18 to 49 year olds. The first season finale, consisting of two episodes, was broadcast on September 9, 2010 in Canada and the United States.

Second season

The second season was broadcast weekly on Thursdays from June 23, 2011 in both the US on ABC and in Canada on Global TV . The broadcast, however, was moved one hour back from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. As a result, the ratings of the second season fell compared to the first season, but compared to the broadcast at 10 p.m. last year, Rookie Blue was able to achieve 14% in the main target group of 18 to 49 year olds and 8% in the first three episodes the total number of viewers. The premiere of the second season on June 23rd had the best ratings for this hour since August 2008. The ratings were therefore the reason for an early extension of the series by a third season. The season finale, which was broadcast on September 8, 2011 from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., also consisted of two episodes.

Third season

The weekly broadcast of the third season in the United States and Canada ran from May 24, 2012 to September 6, 2012.

Fourth season

The fourth season was broadcast from May 23 to September 12, 2013 again simultaneously on ABC and Global TV .

Fifth season

The fifth season was broadcast from May 19 to August 6, 2014.

The third season ran from January 7, 2013 to February 18, 2013 on 13th Street Universal . Season four also aired in double episodes on January 5 through February 16, 2014 on 13th Street Universal . In early 2015, the pay-TV broadcaster 13th Street Universal confirmed that it will not broadcast the fifth season in Germany.

From September 14, 2013, RTL broadcast the first season on free TV on Saturdays. After eleven episodes, however, RTL ended the broadcast prematurely due to insufficient audience ratings.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the private cable broadcaster 3 Plus TV broadcast the first nine episodes of the television series weekly from January 8, 2011 to March 7, 2011. This was followed at irregular intervals by episode ten on March 19, 2011 and episode eleven on April 3, 2011 No statements were made about the further broadcast of the season.

Since November 15, 2014, the Swiss free TV channel S1 has been broadcasting seasons 1-4.

Austria

In Austria, the series has been broadcast on ORF eins since October 17, 2012 .

International

Entertainment One owns the worldwide rights to its television productions.
