Canada Media Fund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Canada Media Fund (CMF; French: Fonds des Medias du Canada (FMC); German: Medienfonds Canada) is a public-private partnership established on April 1, 2010 by the Department of Canadian Heritage (French Patrimoine Canada ) and the Canadian Cable industry was launched. The official mission of the Canada Media Fund is to "Promote, develop and finance the production of Canadian [media] content and relevant applications".

Financing and administrative structure

The Canada Media Fund is financed on behalf of the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) from contributions from Canadian broadcast distribution undertakings (BDUs for short) as well as from grants from the Canadian federal government. According to the CRTC, Canadian BDUs are required to contribute five percent of their earnings to the fund .

Annually, there are grants worth around 350 million US dollars that benefit Canadian media productions and the Canadian media industry. While political decisions, research and communication are reserved for the Canada Media Fund, the administration of funding applications is the responsibility of the "CMF Program Administration" belonging to Telefilm Canada.

history

The founding of the Canada Media Fund was announced in a speech on March 9, 2009 by the then Canadian Minister of Culture, James Moore, and he started work on April 1, 2010. According to Moore, the fund would “invest in broadcasting and interactive digital media” to “improve the playing field at a time when the industry is in a state of structural change” and “help create jobs”. The fund resulted from the merger of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) and the Canada New Media Fund (CNMF).
