action

season 1

Sarah Manning, a petty criminal, is back in her hometown after more than ten months to visit her daughter Kira, who lives with her foster mother Mrs. S. She, too, is an orphan with her foster brother Felix under Mrs. S. ' Grew up care and was an outsider all her life. At the station they watched as a woman who resembles her down to the more sedate style of dress confusingly, suicide commits. Due to her current problematic life and financial situation, her aggressive ex-boyfriend Vic and other problems, she decides to adopt the woman's identity. Felix helps her, who identifies the woman's body as Sarah Manning.

As a result of the change of identity, Sarah now has to cope with the life of the stranger. Beth was a police officer, but was last suspended because she shot the alleged civilian Maggie Chan. Beth also had relationship problems with her boyfriend Paul. Via a mobile phone and through her own research, Sarah learns from Cosima Niehaus that she and Beth were clones and that there are other clones living all over the world. Two of these clones are Cosima herself and Alison Hendrix, a mother who lives in the suburbs. When Sarah meets a clone from Germany named Katja Obinger, she is shot in the back seat of her car. Sarah unknowingly removes the body in a gravel pit, but the dead are discovered a few days later by the police and so Sarah has to start the investigation as a police officer. The assassin who killed Katja turns out to be another clone: Helena, a killer who grew up in a monastery in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Cosima learns that the clones are being guarded by so-called monitors. They are not informed about the background of their assignment and only report to a mysterious organization. The clones try to find out the identity of their monitors. Beth's monitor is her friend Paul, who, after learning about the circumstances of his assignment, rebels against his clients. Cosima's monitor becomes the supposed student Delphine Cormier, with whom Cosima still has a relationship. Delphine also brings Cosima the teaching of the Neolutionists, a kind of sect promoted by Dr. Aldous Leekie, closer. It is learned that Dr. Leekie is aware of the clones and was part of their creation. As Sarah, Cosima and Alison gain more and more information about themselves and their origins, they begin to investigate, which in turn brings with it various problems and consequences.

season 2

After her daughter disappears, Sarah turns to Beth's former police colleague Arthur Bell for help, who, together with his colleague Angela Deangelis, re-opens the investigated deaths and discovers that Sarah has posed as Beth and evidence has been destroyed. Sarah now has to tell Arthur about her secret. Sarah's clone Alison has not prevented the death of one of her neighbors and alleged monitor, continues to try to fill her role in an amateur musical and falls during the performance under the influence of alcohol from the stage, whereupon she is admitted to a rehab clinic. Vic, Sarah's ex-boyfriend, who is in the same rehab clinic as Alison, feels Alison in the clinic and the therapy groups taking place there. The kidnapping of Kira and Mrs. S. was staged, Mrs. S devastated the house and fled with Kira to a supposedly safe place. Unfortunately, this turns out to be not safe enough, Sarah and Kira disappear and seek protection with Cal Morrison, the alleged father of Kira. Even there they are tracked down by Dyad's agents and have to flee again.

Helena is gunned down by Sarah and remains seriously injured on the street, where she is picked up by the very religious people who have looked after her from the start, the so-called prolethians. She could only survive the shot in the heart because her body has the rare anomaly ( situs inversus ) in which the organs are mirror-inverted in the body, as is rarely the case in twins. Helena escapes, and Sarah teams up with her to solve the puzzle from the beginning of her story and track down Ethan Duncan. While Sarah is searching the archives of a research facility from the early 20th century in a church, Helena, who should have been waiting in the car, goes to a bar. After a hard fight, Mark Rollins from the cult family stands in front of her and brings her back. Egg cells are removed from Helena, these are fertilized with the sperm of the father of the family and used for the women of the family. Meanwhile, another clone, a transsexual clone, appears in town to deliver a message to Beth about Paul. As long as his background is checked, he will stay with Felix.

Cosima is continuing to research the genetic sequence responsible for the disease from which the clones suffer and die using stem cells. For this, Kira even gives one of her baby teeth at first. Since this is not enough, a bone marrow donation will be taken from her later. Rachel, another clone, but on Dyad's side, has now taken over the management of the research facility. Dr. Leekie is dropped and accidentally shot by Alison's husband, Donnie. "Officially" died Dr. Leekie aboard one of Dyad's private jets suffers from a heart attack so Alison and her husband can bury the body in their garage. Rachel has become so obsessed with Kira that she slips into the role of Sarah, deceives Mrs. S, drugged Felix and kidnapped Kira from the children's hospital. Sarah has no alternative to see her daughter again, she confronts Dyad and is captured. Sarah is able to escape in time just before an operation in which one of her ovaries was to be removed. Rachel is seriously injured. The head of the company behind Dyad, Marion Bowles, explains to Sarah that there are two research groups. The military is developing male clones in the Castor project , while Dyad is developing female clones in the Leda project . Marion Bowle's eight-year-old daughter Charlotte is also a clone of Project Leda . Meanwhile, with the knowledge of Mrs. S., Helena is abducted by the military.

season 3

Sarah tries to find out where her sister Helena was taken. She goes in search of the Castor clone Marc Rollins, who lived with the Prolethians, to find out more about the Castor base. Marc has fled the care of the Prolethians with the pregnant Gracie and is now also looking for the original genome. Because just like the Leda clones, the Castors suffer from a defect that manifests itself in a neurodegenerative disease and the madness associated with it. When Gracie learns of Marc's clone identity, she goes back to her family and allows her mother to shoot Marc. Sarah witnesses the exchange of fire and saves Marc's life. They find out that Leda and Castor clones are siblings and continue to search for the original genome together. They are tracked down by Rudy, another Castor clone, and also dragged to the Castor base in the Mexican desert. There, Sarah and Helena are subjected to a number of tests because they are the only clones that are not "defective". They also learn that the Castor clones are a kind of weapon, as they infect women during intercourse with a protein that sterilizes them. With Paul's help, Helena and Sarah can finally escape.

In the meantime, Cosima and Scott are trying to decipher the code in Duncan's book to find the original genome. By chance, Scott finds out that Rachel, who lost an eye in Sarah's attack and suffered brain trauma, uses the same symbols in her therapy as those in the book. It turns out that Rachel and her father had a secret language and only she can decipher the encoding. In return, however, she demands that she be taken out of the Dyad Institute, as she is afraid of being killed by dolphins who have taken her place. Since the Castors stole the book at the same time, the clone club responds to their demands and secretly smuggles them into Siobhan's house. But Rachel only manages to translate one page of the copied book before it is revealed and Delphine confiscates the copy in Dyad's name.

While Rachel manages to go into hiding with the help of her neolutionist contacts, Sarah, Mrs. S. and Felix travel to London to investigate the few deciphered clues. It turns out that the carrier of both genomes of origin is none other than Mrs. S 'mother Kendall Malone. Since several organizations are now hunting for the original genome, Sarah goes into hiding with Kira, Siobhan and Kendall in Iceland.

Meanwhile, Alison decides to run for the office of parenting chair at her children's school. Since her husband Donnie quit his job in a skip act, the two take over the drug trafficking from Alison's former dealer in order to be able to finance their lives and the election campaign. They are eventually tracked down by the head of the drug cartel and expand their business under the guise of making soap in Alison's mother's shop. Alison's ex-boyfriend is also part of the cartel and ends up clashing with the jealous Donnie. As a result of the argument, he steals Helena's frozen embryos, which she hid in their shop after she had found accommodation with the Hendrix family. When the drug cartel terminates their cooperation and demands their goods and money back, Helena makes short work of her and procures her embryos and the Hendrix couple all of the cartel's drug money. At the end of the season, Alison is elected as the new parent chairwoman.

On June 12, 2012 it was announced that Temple Street Productions would produce a ten-part first season of the series on behalf of BBC Worldwide and Space . In late June, BBC America announced that it would air the series in the United States . In September 2012 Tatiana Maslany was hired for the central lead role of the series. The remaining leading characters were announced in October 2012 when filming for the first season began in Toronto . Filming ended in February 2013. The series' theme song was composed by Two Fingers .

The scenes in which the clones played by Tatiana Maslany interact with each other were shot several times with the help of doubles . In order to enable cut-free recordings as well as the touching of the individual clones, Maslany had to carry out the same movement sequences in several recordings, which were recorded using motion control and could later be digitally combined.

At the beginning of May 2013, BBC America and Space ordered a second season of the series with again ten episodes due to the very satisfactory ratings. In July 2014, BBC America extended the series to include a ten-part third season. During the broadcast of this season, the series was already extended for a fourth season.

In June 2016, BBC America extended the series by a fifth season, which in turn will consist of ten episodes. At the same time it was announced that the series would end this season.

reception

criticism

The first season of the series received a Metascore of 73/100 on Metacritic based on 20 reviews.

Rachelle Pouplier from Welt.de particularly praises the inventors and producers of the series: “The series is undoubtedly addictive. The creators, Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, have combined the science fiction genre with the noir of Scandinavian crime novels. At the same time, they use comedic and trashy elements. This combination creates an unconventional coolness that - as the success in North America has proven - not only attracts sci-fi nerds in front of the screens. "In her opinion," makes [the series] suitable for the science fiction genre again young television audience. "

Franziska von Malsen, a journalist at the Süddeutsche Zeitung , writes in her conclusion that “The story itself is a bit crudely constructed, something you don't need to worry about in a science fiction thriller. But it is told perfectly, almost every scene builds up tension. So it is unnecessary for the public broadcaster to want to attribute a politically-ethical explosive nature to the whole thing (“there's more to it”). The better reason to watch Orphan Black is the Canadian leading actress Tatiana Maslany, who plays all seven clones and was nominated for the Golden Globe for her multiple roles . "

Thomas Lückerath from DWDL.de wrote about the pilot episode and the first season of the series: "" Orphan Black "is proof that outstanding serial products have long since ceased to come from the USA alone. […] Of course, series are ultimately also a matter of taste, but after just one episode of this science fiction series, which is very closely linked to reality, you know without a doubt whether it fits or not. And anyone who is generally open to the genre will definitely be drawn under the spell of the story [...]. What intoxicated me about "Orphan Black" is an original story and fast-paced implementation that creates a pull. This is not a series of which you have to have seen several episodes to be in it, as is the case with the " Sopranos " and many other masterpieces. […] The series maintains the high level of the pilot throughout the first season […]. The German dubbed version of the series is well done, by the way, but it is not entirely without a downer: the different dialects of some people are only partially adopted in German. That will annoy purists, but doesn't take “Orphan Black” its attraction, which incidentally also wins due to the priceless aspect that as a viewer you often ask yourself “What would I do in Sarah's place?”. Action, suspense, mystery and emotions - everything is in the first 45 minutes and is packed as stylishly as you know it from Scandinavian productions. "

Harald Keller from Frankfurter Rundschau also has a positive opinion of the series: “'Orphan Black', a Canadian-US co-production under the direction of BBC America , is a thriller series at its best. The authors push the plot forward quickly, always come up with new, hardly predictable twists, but do not neglect the emotional components and also treat the audience to a good dose of humor. ”He also praises Tatiana Maslany's ability by saying, that “The series […] essentially [lives] from the skills of the main actress Tatiana Maslany. The Canadian, who was previously seen on German screens in “ Die Tore der Welt ” and “ Being Erica ”, plays all the clone sisters [...]. So she does not play one main role, but several, with completely different character traits, gestures, mannerisms. More than deservedly, she received a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a series in 2014. "

Marcus Kirzynowski from wunschliste.de wrote “Although“ Orphan Black ”is a show of the whole system, which critics typically tend to overlook, the authors around Graeme Manson and John Fawcett by no means under-challenge their viewers. You have to be very careful to be aware of all the plot twists and the revelations in the constant heat of the moment. And just as gripping as the successful action are the more sensitive moments that bind you to the characters. The philosophical questions that lie behind the concept are conveyed incidentally, and basically also answered convincingly through the characterization of the figures: What makes a person are not the (here completely identical) genes, but origin, upbringing and Experience. No textbook in the world can convey this as clearly and entertainingly as Tatiana Maslany. "
