The Emmy Award , or simply Emmy , is the most important television award in the United States and - alongside the Academy Award (Oscar) for film , the Tony Award for theater and the Grammy Award for music  - one of the four major awards in the US entertainment industry. It has been awarded annually since 1949 for the past television season in over 90 different categories. The term "Emmy" is supposed to represent the female personification of "Immy", the English nickname for the image recording tubes (image orthicon tubes) of earlier television cameras .

Depending on the type of program, there are various Emmy competitions: there are the Primetime Emmy Awards for programs that are first broadcast in the evening program . The 71st award was on September 22, 2019, while the 72nd award is scheduled for September 20, 2020.

For programs that are broadcast during the day, including children's programs, there are the Daytime Emmy Awards . There are also the International Emmy Awards for foreign broadcasts and the News & Documentary Emmy Awards for news programs and documentaries.

organization

Three organizations are responsible for the award:

  • the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles for evening programs (excluding sports and news)
  • the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in New York City for daytime movies and features, plus sports and news, for regional broadcasts, and for technical categories
  • the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in New York City for all non-US broadcasts

One of the basic requirements for a television production to be nominated for this award is that the film was first broadcast by a television station.

The Emmys are held in various competitions spread over the year. Depending on the event, national television shows or regionally or locally produced programs are awarded. Each competition has its own nomination and voting system. Also, the various competitions have their own categories, although it is not uncommon to use the same titles, such as the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series and the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.
