action
The Cheers , a small bar in Boston , forms the stage for different characters: The bar owner Sam Malone, a former baseball player, womanizer and dry alcoholic, experiences things of "everyday" life in Cheers with his employees and guests. The employees are the spirited Italian-born employee Carla Tortelli and the naive bartender Ernie Pantusso, known as Coach, who is later replaced by the equally simple-minded Woody Boyd. Then there is the student Diane Chambers, who is left by her fiancé in the first episode in Cheers and is promptly hired by Sam as a waitress. Regulars include the know-it-all postman Cliff Clavin and the mostly unemployed accountant Norm Peterson. In later episodes, the psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane and his wife Dr. Lilith Sternin-Crane, also a psychiatrist, added. Amorous complications occur regularly between Sam and Diane. A crisis in his relationship with Diane leads Sam to sell the bar. With Rebecca Howe, the new managing director, Sam leaves no opportunity to make an advances.
Offshoots and cross connections
From Cheers there were two offshoot series that circumstances linked to the original series:
- In The Tortellis was Carla's ex-husband Nick Tortelli ( Dan Hedaya ), who in six episodes of Cheers had played, at the center. Rhea Perlman starred in the pilot ; George Wendt and John Ratzenberger in the episode Frankie Comes to Dinner . The Tortellis ran for only 13 episodes in 1987 and has not yet been shown on German television.
- Much more successful was in 1993, right after the end of Cheers , Frasier , in which the character of Dr. Focus on Frasier Crane. In 2002 there was a farewell reunion with Cliff, Norm and Carla in the Frasier episode Cheers . Before that, Sam, Woody and, later, Diane several times, had guest appearances. Lilith appeared regularly on the series as Frasier's ex-wife. By the time it was discontinued in 2004, Frasier had created 264 episodes .
In addition, characters from Cheers and their actors appeared in other series in the form of crossovers :
- Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt and John Ratzenberger lent the voices of their characters from Cheer 's characters of the same name in the episode Fear of Flying (1994) of the animated series The Simpsons . Before that, there was a parody of the Cheers opening credits and a Diane Chambers-inspired character named Colette (also spoken by Madeleine Stolze in the German version ) in the episode The Recipe for Success (1991).
- Guest appearances in the series Überflieger had George Wendt and John Ratzenberger as Norm Peterson and Cliff Clavin ( Der absolute Antihero , 1990), Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier Crane and Lilith Sternin-Crane ( Der Zug zum Seelischen Wohlbefinden , 1992) and Kirstie Alley as Rebbecca Howe ( Brian and the Celebrities , 1993).
- In the episode The Messiah (in the original Cheers , 1985) of the series Chief Physician Dr. Westphall , Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger and George Wendt played their characters from Cheers .
Through spin-offs, crossovers and guest appearances in the context of the respective offshoot series, Cheers is the origin of a common series universe of Cheers , chief physician Dr. Westphall , The Tortellis , High Flyer , Frasier , Night Shift with John , Caroline in the City , Friends , Joey , Crazy About You and Seinfeld .
synchronization

In Germany, Cheers started in 1985 under the title Prost Helmut on ZDF . However, the synchronization did not correspond to the original and the names of the main characters were also renamed: Sam Hubert Milbe was called, Diane was Diane Zimmerlinde, Norm became Helmut and Cliff became Uwe. Ivar Combrinck was responsible for the German version, which was created at the Arena Synchron in Berlin, as dialogue writer and dubbing director. He also lent Ted Danson his voice and sang the theme song which he translated into German. In this version, the series had only moderate success and was discontinued after 13 episodes.

“Surviving everyday anger takes a lot of strength.
Anyone who has worked hard for hours is always done.
Who doesn't like to relax then?
Then you look for a place where you feel at home
and wash away your grief.
Meet friends, talk, drink and be
happy until the early hours despite all worries .
Discussions, arguments, reconciliation - in a familiar setting.
Everyone is greeted here by name. "

It was not until ten years later, in 1995 and 1996, that RTL showed all the episodes in a true-to-original dubbed version under the title Cheers . The German processing was done by the company Plaza Synchron in Munich. background
The building shown as Cheers in the opening credits and in many of the cutscenes of the series is located at 84 Beacon Street in Boston . It was founded in 1969 as the Bull & Finch Pub . In the summer of 1981, screenwriting couple Mary Ann and Glen Charles visited Bull & Finch looking for a pub to inspire their new TV series. Pictures of the interior of the Bull & Finch were later used as the architectural template for the film set of the series Cheers (Stage 25 in Paramount Studios in Hollywood). The Cheers (Bull & Finch) in Boston has some similarities with the film set of the series Cheers, but otherwise differs from it. The Bull & Finch Pub no longer uses its original name due to numerous misunderstandings on the part of visitors and tourists. It continues to operate as a bar and restaurant under the name Cheers and is now one of Boston's numerous tourist attractions.
- Each episode begins with a scene lasting about one to two minutes, which is often directly related to the episode, but is usually of no importance for the course of the story. The opening credits follow the punch line of this sequence.
- A running gag is the fact that the obese norm is constantly thirsty and hungry and takes every opportunity to drink or eat. Another running gag is that it is usually greeted in Cheers (and in other restaurants and bars) with a loud and polyphonic “Norm!”. Then one of the bartenders asks how you are or something similar and Norman answers with a gag. These running gags are known in the USA under the name "Normisms". For example:
Coach: "Well, Norm, how is life with you?"
Norm: "As if I were in bed with his wife!" - Kelsey Grammer, George Wendt and John Ratzenberger were originally only signed for a few episodes.
- Sam Malone, Carla Tortelli, and Norm Peterson are the only characters that appear in every episode of Cheers .
- George Wendt is also the only actor to have played the same character - Norm Peterson - in seven different television series. In addition, John Ratzenberger, along with Paul Fusco (the original voice of Alf ) and Richard Belzer (as Detective John Munch), is one of the only three actors who played their characters in six different television series.
- The character Morn from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series pays homage to the character Norm from Cheers . Morn is a regular at the Quarks bar . The name is an anagram for "norm".
- Woody Harrelson not only shares his first name with the character Woody Boyd he embodies: The character comes from Hanover, Indiana, where Woody Harrelson used to go to college.
- At the end of the series, Carla has eight children from three different men (Nick Tortelli: Anthony, Ann Marie, Serafina, Jeno, Lucia / Dr. Bennett Ludlow: Ludlow / Eddie LeBec: The twins Elvis and Jesse).
- Nicholas Colasanto (Coach) passed away unexpectedly while filming the third season, episode beginning or end . He was replaced by Woody Harrelson in his own role.
