Chief Physician Dr. Westphall (original title: St. Elsewhere , German: Sankt Elsewhere) is an American television series about the fictional St. Eligius Hospital in a decaying district in the south of Boston .

For most of the staff at St. Eligius Hospital, Dr. Westphall is more of a father figure than a superior. Several storylines run in parallel through various of the one-hour series episodes. In contrast to other doctor series, weird and macabre elements were repeatedly added to the plot. Occasionally there were allusions to current films and series; In the English-language original, for example, doctors from other series were repeatedly referred to.

In the finale of the series, all events were viewed as daydreams by Dr. Westphall's son Tommy ( Chad Allen ) is shown who is autistic .

The series was broadcast weekly in the US on NBC between October 1982 and August 1988 in the evening program. In Germany, RTL plus broadcast the series from January 6, 1991, it switched to sister channel RTL 2 while the fourth season was being broadcast

The series was the first on US television in 1983 to portray the suffering of an AIDS patient.

The US pharmaceutical industry uses St. Elsewhere to refer to those hospitals that are responsible for the basic care of the predominantly poor population with little financial means.

In the series, the experiences of the doctor Lance Luria were processed. This is a friend of the co-inventor of the series Joshua Brand. Brand and Falsey also created the Alaska series, of all things , which also draws on Luria's experiences.

William Daniels is the voice of the wonder car KITT in the English-language original of the series Knight Rider
