Doris May Roberts (born November 4, 1925 in St. Louis , † April 17, 2016 in Los Angeles ) was an American actress of Russian origin. She has received five Emmy awards and one Screen Actors Guild Award .

Life

Doris Roberts grew up with her mother Ann Melzer in the Bronx, New York . She never made the identity of her father public - he left the family when she was a child. She was married to Michael Cannata until their divorce in 1962, and to the writer William Goyen from 1963 until his death in 1983 . Most recently she lived in Los Angeles in a former home of actor James Dean .

Her acting career began in 1951 with a guest appearance on the television series Starlight Theater . Other minor roles followed in the 1950s for television and appearances on Broadway . In 1961 she played a role in Wilde Buds for the first time in a movie, followed by many others, for example in Barefoot in the Park , Nobody Kills As Badly As I Do and Stops the Death Ride of Subway 123 . In later years she mainly played comedic roles, for example alongside Chevy Chase in the Christmas film Schöne Bescherung (1989) and as a grandmother in the comedy Grandma's Boy (2006). She also played the title role of the enchanting Mrs. Miracle in two television films. Roberts starred in numerous films and television series; their work includes more than 150 productions.

The actress' fame was based primarily on her roles in two American television series: In Remington Steele (1983–1987) she played the feisty secretary Mildred Krebs, and in All Love Raymond (1996–2005) she played Marie Barone, the mother of Protagonists. For the latter, she won the Emmy four times for best supporting actress in a comedy series. In 1989 she had a guest appearance on the series Full House as Danny Tanner's mother.

In addition to acting, Doris Roberts was also committed to combating age discrimination in the film business and supporting HIV- positive children. She was the United States Cultural Ambassador . In 2005 she published an "autobiographical cookbook" Are You Hungry, Dear? Life, Laughs, and Lasagna . In 2003 she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . Doris Roberts died of a stroke at the age of 90 .
