The Streets of San Francisco (original title: The Streets of San Francisco ) is an American crime film - television series , from the years 1972 to 1977 in five seasons created a total of 120 episodes of 45 minutes each. It started in the US with the pilot on September 16, 1972 on ABC . In Germany the series ran on ZDF from 1974 . From the end of the 1980s, ProSieben repeated the series and broadcast the previously missing episodes that were not shown on ZDF. A technically reconditioned version ran in 2014 at RTL Nitro .

action

The title characters, Detective Lieutenant Mike Stone ( Karl Malden ) and Inspector Steve Keller ( Michael Douglas ) - in Germany Steve Heller, to avoid having the same name as the German television commissioner Keller ( Erik Ode ) - pursued criminals with some rapid chases in downtown San Francisco . In the fifth and final season, Richard Hatch took over from Michael Douglas, who at the time made a name for himself as a producer with the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest . With Hatch, however, the audience ratings collapsed, so the series was discontinued after the fifth season. In the first two episodes of the fifth season (designed as a double episode), all three main actors - Karl Malden, Michael Douglas and Richard Hatch - appear together in front of the camera. In the course of this double episode, Inspector Steve Heller, who is toying with the start of a teaching position at the police academy, is shot and seriously injured, which accelerates his retirement from active service and the assumption of that teaching position.

In preparation, both lead actors spent a certain amount of time with employees of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) in order to be able to play their roles as authentically as possible. The entire seasons were filmed on location in San Francisco. In a warehouse at the end of Kearny Street opposite the Telegraph Hill , the interior shots were filmed.

The series was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards . While Karl Malden already had a successful acting career, the series first made the young Michael Douglas known. A factor in the great success of the series that should not be underestimated was the music by Patrick Williams - especially the energetic title sequence, which musically reflected the atmosphere of modern city streets. Probably the decisive role played the relationship between the two protagonists, with Mike Stone not only the experienced partner, but also a kind of father figure for Steve Heller. This is the context in which the quota slump after Michael Douglas left the company is ultimately explained.

In 1992 NBC aired the feature film Back on the streets of San Francisco , the content of which was based on the series. In it, however, only worked Karl Malden and Autovermietung Carr. Karl Malden played Mike Stone again, meanwhile promoted to Captain of Detectives, to solve, among other things, the murder of his former colleague Heller. Krediten Carr made several appearances as Mike Stone's daughter on the series. The murdered Steve Heller was not seen in this film; only his original Porsche from the series was recovered from the San Francisco Bay . Richard Hatch wasn't there either.

Manipulated episode

In the episode "Die Ausreißerin" (broadcast in Austria on July 31, 1978) there was a manipulation of the German synchronization. In this episode there were terrorist scenes and shots at Steve Heller; this ultimately handed over his part to Dan Robbins. Here, Michael Douglas were in this handover of parts in successor Richard Hatch put words in his mouth, he did not speak in the original and it was a scene with terrorists cut etc. The reason for this action was the kidnapping of Hanns Martin Schleyer , due who in Germany did not want to show such scenes.

criticism

The 1976 replacement of Michael Douglas by Richard Hatch apparently led to the discontinuation of the series because Hatch was too untalented. One critic wrote that "although his teeth are more beautiful than Maldens nose, his acting is more suitable for toothpaste advertising".
