Leslie William Nielsen , OC , (born February 11, 1926 in Regina , Saskatchewan , † November 28, 2010 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida ) was a Canadian actor .

Life

Nielsen grew up in Tulita (formerly Fort Norman) in the Northwest Territories , Canada . His Danish father served as a mountie and raised him very strictly; the mother was from Wales . His uncle Jean Hersholt was a successful actor. Leslie Nielsen studied at the Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto before succumbing to the Neighborhood Playhouse of New York changed.

He made his film debut in 1956 in King of the Vagabonds by Michael Curtiz . He then got a bigger role in the successful science fiction film Alarm im Weltall ( Forbidden Planet ), which Nielsen in turn brought in a long-term contract with the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio and thus various engagements in major Hollywood productions, but without him in the first Raise ranks of character actors. Nielsen was shortlisted for the casting for the character of Messala in the monumental film Ben Hur (1959) before director William Wyler chose Stephen Boyd . Corresponding test recordings were published on DVD.

After working as an actor for cinema and television productions and as a disc jockey for various radio stations for over 30 years , Nielsen experienced a career boost in 1980 with the comedy The incredible journey in a crazy plane . Although he only played a supporting role in the film, he was able to shine in this with his ability to remain completely serious and unmoved from the outside despite absurd and funny dialogues and slapstick interludes, which became his trademark. A long and successful collaboration as a comedy actor with the filmmaker trio ZAZ (Zucker Abrahams Zucker) followed. In 1982 he took on the lead role in the US television series Die Nackte Pistole ( Police Squad! ), Written and produced by ZAZ , of which only six episodes have cult status and for which Nielsen received an Emmy nomination. In 1987 he also had a guest appearance on the series An Angel on Earth .

Which builds on the series movie The Naked Gun ( The Naked Gun , 1988) was an international success and a landmark of classic slapstick film . The role of the clumsy police special investigator Frank Drebin , who is inextricably linked with Nielsen, he played in two sequels, Die nackte Kanone 2½ (1991) and Die nackte Kanone 33⅓ (1994). Various other leading and supporting roles in similar films followed.

Nielsen was married four times. His second marriage resulted in two daughters. Erik Nielsen , one of his brothers, was Vice Prime Minister and Secretary of Defense of Canada from 1984 to 1986 .

Leslie Nielsen was an officer in the Order of Canada and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . He died on November 28, 2010 at the age of 84 in a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, of complications from pneumonia . Nielsen found his final resting place in Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale.
