Leslie Nielsen Is Very Suspicious (Original Title: Wrongfully Accused , Alternative Title: Very Suspicious ) is an American - German comedy film directed by Pat Proft in 1998 .

action

The violin virtuoso Ryan Harrison is a gifted musician and is invited to the property of the millionaire Hibbing Goodhue during a concert tour through the USA . On the one hand because he sponsors his tour, on the other hand because he has started a relationship with Hibbing's wife Lauren, who has made him clear advances.

On the evening of one of his concerts, Harrison receives a message from Lauren asking him to do another tête-à-tête, while Hibbing is attacked by an unknown person in his villa. When Harrison arrives at the property, Lauren has disappeared, but the killer, who is equipped with artificial body parts, attacks him. During a scuffle, Harrison is knocked down by the stranger. The next day Goodhue is dead and Harrison wakes up next to his body, hung with various weapons. The police present arrest the violinist as the alleged murderer of the millionaire, and he is sentenced to death. During the drive to the execution there is an accident in which Harrison can finally escape.

The police in the form of Lieutenant Fergus Falls then begin to hunt Harrison with a large contingent. Harrison himself manages several times - sometimes with luck - to escape falls and the police. He finds the mysterious Cass Lake, who he already met at Hibbing's party, and goes into hiding with her. But Cass seems to be keeping a secret.

Through an indication of the killer’s artificial limbs, he obtained clues about the assassin in a hospital and found out that he had a prosthetic sniper rifle made for an as yet unknown assassination. When he chases the one-armed man and one-legged man and barely escapes an attack on a corn field, he falls into the trap of the real murderers: Lauren and Sean Laughrea, the prosthesis killer, terrorist and at the same time Lauren's brother. Both are freedom fighters and want to kill the UN Secretary-General Sir Robert McKintyre, who wants to start an anti-terror campaign, with the attack. Lauren only got involved with Goodhue because he was a close confidante of McKintyre and so she was able to establish the necessary contacts. Cass, who is also in the troupe, is only a painter herself and wanted to make a portrait of Hibbing. She only helped Sean and Lauren because she believed she was related to Lauren and Sean. But when she realizes that McKintyre - who also turns out to be Cass' father - is to be killed, she takes Harrison's side again.

During the Scottish " Columbia Heights " festival on which the attack is planned Harrison can prevent the murder McKintyres and bring it to safety. After a wild chase in front of the terrorists led by Lauren, who ambush Harrison, Cass and McKintyre, Harrison is able to protect the inmates and also provide Lauren's freedom fighters. Lieutenant Falls arrests the terrorists and also declares Harrison innocent and "wrongfully accused" (original title). He and Cass Lake become a couple and head towards a future together.

Parodies

  • On the Run - The plot of Very Suspicious mainly parodies the1993action thriller starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones . Again, an innocent man is sentenced to death for murder and is able to escape to find the real killer. In this film, Richard Crenna takes on the role of the US Marshal in pursuit. Crenna worked on Hot Shots! - The second attempt together with director Pat Proft, where he parodied his most famous role as Col. Trautman from the Rambo trilogy.
  • Lord of the Dance - The poster for Harrison's concert shows him in a similar pose with a bared torso as Michael Flatley was seen on the poster for his dance show, with Harrison holding a violin in his outstretched arm. The title of the concert on the poster is "Lord of the Violins". Also, towards the end of the film, the cornered Irish terrorists dancein a similar choreography when police officers fire warning shots at their feet.
  • Star Wars - At the beginning of the film, theconcert hall usher usesa lightsaber, the Jedi's main weapon, to direct Cass Lake to her seat. Sean later kills Laughrea Harrison with a metal tabletop, which takes on a shape like Han Solo from the fifth episode of the Star Wars saga, The Empire Strikes Back, frozen in a carbonite block.
  • Titanic - During the first fight with the terrorist, Harrison beats him with tied stacks of paper, which emits large amounts of water. On the cover you can read that this is the first draft of the script for "Titanic". The final scene in the film parodies the bow scene with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet .
  • Baywatch - After Harrison falls from the dam, several alleged lifeguards in red-orange swimsuits become active, parodying the opening credits of the series, but holding bath toys in their hands instead of life-saving items. The original music was played for these scenes.
  • Charlie's Angels - The US Marshals storm into Cass Lake's apartment and assume the familiar pose of angels. In addition, the head of the marshals shouts "Come on, angels, go on!"
  • Mentos - When Harrison is trapped in a bathroom, he eats a mentos to find a solution to the problem. Similar scenarios formed the basis of the Mentos television advertising campaign at the time.
  • Toys "R" Us - The building where Sean Laughrea receives his prostheses for his mission is emblazoned with a "Limbs" R "logo based on" Toys "R" Us "(English means" toys - that's us ") Us "(English for" limbs - that's us ")
  • Mission: Impossible - The scene in which Harrison "accidentally ropes down" through the air conditioning duct into the archive through countless electrical cables parodies a similar scene from the agent film with Tom Cruise . The laser beams of the security system form a hexagram when viewed from above, i.e. the Star of David .
  • The Invisible Third - The scene on the cornfield refers to the thriller by Alfred Hitchcock , where the protagonist is attacked by a double-decker in front of a cornfield.
  • Field of Dreams - In the same scene, three baseball players are previously seen walking on the cornfield and ghosts disappearing, like in a scene from Field of Dreams from 1989.
  • The darn 7th year - In one scene with the Scottish Guard, Harrison is standing in his kilt over a ventilation grille that always blows his skirt up. This refers to the Marilyn Monroe movie, which happens something similar to what has since been referred to as the Monroe Effect .
  • Braveheart - During the fight at the Scotland Festival, Harrison flies upside down in an art booth, whereupon his face is smeared with blue paint on the left and right sides, and he wears a ball of hay like long dark blond hair on his head, making him Mel Gibson in the 1995 film about Scottish national hero William Wallace.
  • The Cartel - When the ambush breaks out, Harrison, Cass and McKintyre are shot at from the roof. This scene is based on the attack on the car convoy.
  • Dirty Harry - Harrison threatens Laughrea with a pistol and says: "Did I shoot the last bullet or is there still one in the chamber [...]". Inspector Callahan has a similar dialogue after a robbery has failed.
  • The Usual Suspects - While chatting in the fishing shop with the cops and the shopkeeper, Harrison randomly knits a life story from words and brand names that he reads around the store. After leaving the store, one of the shopkeepers notices the words while hearing Harrison's previous statements about them. The shopkeeper freezes and drops his coffee cup. This is a parody of the interrogation between Roger "Verbal" Kint ( Kevin Spacey ) and Customs Inspector Dave Kujan ( Chazz Palminteri ) just before the 1995 film's pivotal twist.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was more likely to "make viewers sick" than make them laugh. At the time the review was written, it was the worst comedy of the year ("It's probably not the last stupid comedy of 1998, but, at least to date, it's easily the worst"). Leslie Nielsen should retire because he has played so many roles that he no longer seems amusing, but boring.

"Poor slapstick clothing that never goes beyond the level of a carelessly cobbled together gag parade."

“The action thriller starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones is the main template for Proft's parody [...]. Of course, he stumbles through a number of faux pas and disrespectful movie quotes [...]. And of course "Very Suspicious" fits in seamlessly with Proft's slapstick work. But his directorial debut has a problem: Proft not only steals film history, but also himself. And when a film parody parodies other film parodies, only the hardcore fans have something to laugh about. [...] Conclusion: medium ingenious gag revue. "

“Almost ten years after" Die nackte Kanone "successfully set its sights on the limits of good taste worldwide, the last of the quartet of authors at the time is now to be honored as a director. After Jim Abrahams, David and Jerry Zucker, Pat Proft also dares to go behind the camera and stages the self-composed slapstick he expected, which founded his own career and which, with the help of the sprightly stupid retiree Leslie Nielsen, should ensure an audience result in the millions. [...] Newcomers to this genre will have fun. But for those familiar with the territory, which the Zucker brothers and Mel Brooks have well trodden, this humor shows signs of wear and tear. Even if Proft is brand new with two "Titanic" gags (...). "

useful information

  • Instead of his standard speaker Horst Schön , Leslie Nielsen was dubbed here by Klaus Guth .
  • A newscaster in the film is called "Ruth Kimble". This is a reference to “Dr. Richard Kimble “, the main character of the parodied film On the Run . In addition, a “Dr. Kimble ”exclaimed.
  • The main character "Ryan Harrison" was also derived from other names. While "Ryan" refers to "Jack Ryan" (main character in the cartoonized Clancy films The Hour of the Patriots and The Cartel ), "Harrison" is a reference to Harrison Ford , who appeared in both On the Run and the aforementioned Tom Clancy films starred.
  • The film was shot in Vancouver . It grossed approximately $ 9.6 million in US cinemas . In Germany, 957,302 cinema-goers were counted up to 23 August 1998.
