Mentos and Cola

Reaction of Mentos with Diet Coke

If you put Mentos in a bottle with a carbonated liquid, a fountain of the liquid squirts out of the bottle. This purely physical phenomenon is due to the microscopically rough surface of the candy. The carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) dissolved in the cola can accumulate there, collect in larger bubbles, rise and thereby release even more CO 2 . The rapid speed at which this takes place pulls liquid along to the thin neck of the bottle.
