life and career

1975 to 1994

Winslet comes from a family with an acting tradition. Her maternal grandparents ran the Reading theater . Her parents, Sally Ann Bridges and Roger John Winslet, were actors and her uncle Robert Bridges was a celebrated star in the musical Oliver! in London's West End . Her younger sister Beth and older sister Anna Winslet are also actresses.

Winslet began her career in 1986 at the age of eleven when she took acting classes at the Redroofs Theater School in Maidenhead and got her first acting role in a breakfast cereal commercial. She made her television debut in the seven-episode British television drama Shrinks (1990). This was followed by appearances in the hospital series Casualty (1990), the science fiction series Dark Season (1991), the sitcom Get Back (1992) and in the three-part miniseries Anglo-Saxon Attitudes (1992). She also played theater. In the early 90s she was seen as Pandora in the musical The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 , as Miss Hannigan in Annie and as Wendy in Peter Pan . From April 7th to May 7th, 1994 she played Geraldine Barclay in What The Butler Saw in Manchester and was nominated for best supporting actress by the renowned British "Manchester Evening News Theater Awards". In 1995 she also played Sarah in A Game Of Soldiers in Bristol .

1994 to 1998

Kate Winslet played her first movie role in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures in 1994 . In it, she embodied an underage murderer. In 1995 she had her breakthrough as Marianne Dashwood in Ang Lee's film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility ; she starred in it alongside a number of successful British actors such as Emma Thompson , Hugh Grant , Alan Rickman and Greg Wise . For her portrayal, she was also nominated for an Oscar for the first time as best supporting actress; at the award ceremony on March 25, 1996 she was defeated by Mira Sorvino ( Beloved Aphrodite ) .

In 1996 she played the rebellious Sue Bridehead in Michael Winterbottom's drama Hearts in Turmoil . After she had also successfully played Ophelia in Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film Hamlet in the same year , Hollywood noticed her.

Since Gwyneth Paltrow and Claire Danes had refused, Winslet was hired by the US director James Cameron for his filming of the sinking of the Titanic for one of the leading roles. At the side of Leonardo DiCaprio , she played the role of the young Rose DeWitt Bukater. For this performance she was nominated for an Oscar for best actress. Titanic itself received eleven prizes at the award ceremony on March 23, 1998, including best film and best director; Winslet, on the other hand, had to give priority to Helen Hunt ( it couldn't be better ) .

The participation in the hitherto most successful film gave her the ultimate breakthrough and the chance for further leading roles in major Hollywood productions. Winslet initially waived such offers; they preferred smaller film projects such as the low-budget film Marrakech by Gillies MacKinnon , the 1999 10th place of the German box office reached.

After appearing in Jane Campion's Holy Smoke (1999), she played other demanding roles in the independent films Quills - Power of Obsession (2000) and Enigma - The Secret (2001).

In 2001 she also voiced the character Belle in the animated film A Christmas Tale of the Christmas classic A Christmas Carol and recorded the song What If , which was written and produced by Steve Mac , for the soundtrack . In November 2001 What If was released as a single and reached the top 10 in the charts in Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, and first place in Ireland, Belgium and Austria. Winslet donated the proceeds from CD sales to charities. The video for the song was shot by Paul Donnellon and produced by Chris Horton. Despite the great success as a singer, Winslet turned down a career in the music business.

For the film Iris (2001), in which she played the writer Iris Murdoch in her younger years, Winslet was again nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress. Her film colleagues Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent also received nominations for their achievements. At the award ceremony on March 24, 2002, however, only Broadbent won an Oscar for best supporting actor, while Dench and Winslet had to admit defeat to Halle Berry ( Monster's Ball ) and Jennifer Connelly ( A Beautiful Mind ) .

After her appearance in the thriller The Life of David Gale at the side of Kevin Spacey and Laura Linney , she was seen in two films in 2004 that were equally acclaimed by audiences and critics. The animated film Flutsch und weg , in which Winslet played the Rat Rita lent her voice.

In the comedy Love Doesn't Need a Vacation by director Nancy Meyers , Winslet and Cameron Diaz played two women who, because of lovesickness, need a change of scenery and simply swap their houses and living conditions. Love does not need a vacation reached number 2 in the German cinema charts at the beginning of 2007 and thus for Winslet the best placement of a film with her participation since Titanic .

Winslet received her fifth nomination for an Oscar in early 2007 for Best Actress in the film Little Children (2006), in which she plays a young mother who has to watch her family break up and therefore into the arms of one Lover escapes. At the Academy Awards on February 25, 2007, Winslet had to admit defeat to her British colleague Helen Mirren , who had previously been traded as a favorite with her portrayal of British Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen . With five nominations at the age of 32, Winslet broke the record as the youngest actress from Olivia de Havilland , who received her fifth Oscar nomination in 1949 at the age of 33.

2007 to 2009

Ten years after Titanic , Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio were back in front of the camera in April 2007. Directed by Winslet's then husband Sam Mendes , the two played the Wheelers in the film Times of Turmoil , which is based on Richard Yates' 1961 novel of the same name , and in the 1950s they appear happy and harmonious. whose love threatens to wither. In the same year, Winslet was directed by Stephen Daldry in the film adaptation of the bestseller The Reader by Bernhard Schlink . Winslet was asked for the role of Hanna Schmitz, but she could not accept due to a scheduling conflict. So Nicole Kidman was hired, but she had to cancel because of her pregnancy and Winslet was asked a second time. Stephen Daldry directed and David Hare wrote the script. Most of the film was shot in Germany, co-financed with German funding and also starred with German actors such as David Kross and Alexandra Maria Lara .

The Golden Globe ceremony on January 11, 2009 was a surprising triumph for Kate Winslet. She was not only honored for her role as April Wheeler in times of turmoil in the category Best Leading Actress , but also received the award for best supporting actress for her role as Hanna Schmitz in Der Vorleser .

Winslet reached her preliminary career high point at the Academy Awards on February 22, 2009. In the sixth attempt, she received the trophy for best leading actress for The Reader . HBO aired the series in March and April 2011. Other leading roles played Evan Rachel Wood ( The Wrestler ) and Guy Pearce ( The King's Speech ). The audience ratings for the station were disappointing despite good reviews. Nevertheless, Mildred Pierce received 21 nominations, the most nominations for the 63rd Emmy Awards, which took place on September 18, 2011 in Los Angeles . While the series itself failed to live up to its role of favorite, Winslet received the award for best leading actress in a miniseries for her performance in Mildred Pierce .

US director and Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh hired Winslet for the action thriller Contagion , for which she starred in front of the camera with Matt Damon , Jude Law , Gwyneth Paltrow , Marion Cotillard and Laurence Fishburne , among others . The film describes the worldwide spread of a deadly virus and accompanies various characters in their attempts to analyze and stop the epidemic. In the spring of 2011, Winslet, Jodie Foster , John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz began shooting Der Gott des Gemetzels , a film adaptation of the play of the same name by Yasmina Reza, directed by Roman Polański in Paris .

In honor of jury member Todd Haynes , who wrote the screenplay for Mildred Pierce , the Winslet-starred multi-part was also presented there.

The thriller Contagion , which received positive reviews from critics , opened in American cinemas on September 9, 2011 and grossed over 22 million US dollars over the opening weekend .
