The Dolby Theater , home of the 2016 Academy Awards
Chris Rock , presenter of the awards

The 88th ceremony of Oscars ( english 88th Academy Awards ) took place on 28 February 2016 Dolby Theater in Los Angeles instead.

The winner of the awards for the best films of the film year 2015 was the film Mad Max: Fury Road with six awards, but only in technology-related categories. This is followed by The Revenant , with three Oscars , which received outstanding awards such as best director and best actor. The best film was Spotlight , which was also awarded the Oscar for best original screenplay. All other films received at most an Oscar.

US film and television producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin were responsible for the production of the 88th Academy Awards . Hudlin was involved as a producer on the 2013 Oscar-nominated western Django Unchained . For the second time, the awards ceremony was hosted by actor Chris Rock , who had already hosted the 2005 Academy Awards .

The nominations were announced at a press conference on January 14, 2016 by Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee, and AMPAS President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and John Krasinski . The most successful film with twelve nominations was The Revenant , followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with ten and The Martian - Rescues Mark Watney with seven nominations.

While the German, Austrian and Swiss submissions for the best foreign-language film did not receive a nomination, the short film Alles wird gut by German director Patrick Vollrath was nominated as best short film.

After the nominations were announced, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences faced growing criticism - all nominations in the actor categories had received white actors, as in the previous year, although black actors such as Idris Elba ( Beasts of No Nation ) , Michael B. Jordan ( Creed - Rocky's Legacy ) or Will Smith ( Shattering Truth ) had found consideration. Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith , and honorary award winner Spike Lee then publicly criticized this lack of ethnic diversity and announced that they would not appear at the Academy Awards. The Academy's board of directors, under African American President Cheryl Boone Isaacs , then voted for new rules to double the number of women and minorities by 2020.
