Ettore Scola (born May 10, 1931 in Trevico , Campania , † January 19, 2016 in Rome ) was an Italian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Scola, the son of a doctor, was already drawing as a cartoonist for the satirical newspaper Marc 'Aurelio at the age of 16 and thus came into contact with the young Federico Fellini and the “world of Italian post-war film”. After school, Scola first began studying medicine, which he gave up in favor of studying law. After graduating, he worked as a screenwriter for several years before making his directorial debut in 1964.

The filmmaker, who in his early comedies was also not afraid of “hearty slapstick”, developed a “film language” in the 1970s that earned him international recognition and for the next decade he was the “legitimate heir of Rossellini , de Sica and Fellini”. he lifted. Scola received several prestigious film awards as a result. He was honored with the main prize at the 1974 Moscow International Film Festival for his dramatic comedy We were so in love , and in 1977 the film was awarded the César in the category of best foreign film .
