Mario Monicelli
Mario Monicelli (born May 16, 1915 in Rome , † November 29, 2010 in Rome) was an Italian screenwriter and film director .
Life
Mario Monicelli, son of the journalist and theater critic Tommaso Monicelli, completed a degree in history and philosophy . This could be seen in later script work . He was already writing film reviews in 1932, and two years later he made his first short film as an amateur . In 1936 he became an assistant director and from 1942 wrote scripts. His first directorial work was done in 1949 in a team with Steno .
Monicelli's films Thieves Have It Hard (1958), They Called It The Great War (1959) and You Don't Catch Men With Guns (1968) were nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Language Film . The filmmaker himself was nominated for an Academy Award as a code screenwriter for The Whip in the Neck in 1965 and for Casanova '70 in 1966 . At the 1957 Berlinale , he received his first Silver Bear for his film Fathers and Sons . Two more followed at the Berlinale in 1976 and at the Berlinale in 1982 for his directorial work on Lieber Michele and The maddened pranks of the Marchese del Grillo .
In 1991 he was honored with a Golden Lion for his life's work .
Monicelli's oeuvre includes over 60 directorial works and around 90 screenplays. With Le Rose del deserto (2006) he was still active as a writer and director at the age of 90 . He is considered "one of the fathers of Italian comedy". His visual aesthetics had a huge impact on pop culture.
Mario Monicelli died in November 2010 after throwing himself out of a window in the San Giovanni hospital in Rome . He was there to treat cancer.
In 2015, in the 100th year of Monicelli's birth, the 72nd Venice International Film Festival will commemorate the director with the screening of a restored version of Vogliamo i colonnelli (1973) and the art project “Fantasmi”. For the project, Monicelli's long-time partner, the artist Chiara Rapaccini (better known under the stage name "RAP") reworked unpublished recordings from the 1960s to 1990s showing the filmmaker on the set. Monicelli had originally wanted to throw the documents away.
A younger brother of Monicelli was the writer Furio Monicelli (1924–2011).
